I'm a little confused by people's ideas on what is/isn't bokeh, and what is/isn't good bokeh. I think what some are saying is that a soft blur is what you're looking for, rather than your doughnuts or circles of light... Is that right? Or is textbook (good?) bokeh the contrast between the sharp fore/back-ground and the soft back/fore-ground or gradients thereof?
Would this be (good) bokeh?

>> Thanks! I'm still thinking about which lens to use, & how. Bokeh challenges are my fav. Though I'm usually disappointed in the choice of winners.
Easy for me - I only have one! :)

for me this Picture (to post your picture, copy the address, go to the top bar on above and the 3rd one from the right, paste your address in there...) is very appealing ... Personally, I like the dreamy background, but there are many, many others on this site that like the CoC (Circles of Confusion) and have that as a major component of the picture. So the bottom line is to find an outstanding subject for your foreground and do what you like best for the background...

And I think you actually have a pretty good lens for this challenge...

Bold added by me. Nowhere in the challenge description does is say the subject must be in the foreground and the bokeh behind it. I've seen some fabulous images with both foreground and background bokeh happening all at once. There are so many ways to approach this challenge, especially since the challenge description field actually has a N/A in it.

I don't care if people (in general) want to limit themselves, but I get so tired of people( in general) trying to limit everyone else too. Bokeh is about what is pleasing for the viewer to look at...be it ultimate creamy-ness or those fabulous floaty spheres...it's all good in my book.

Possibly the best example of Bokeh ever... whats that? one of mine? - oh yes - forgot that.. Whatever, carry on.

It is awesome though.

Man, that shot was nothing but a blatant ripoff of this shot of mine:

I don't care that my shot was taken a year after yours. Somehow you still ripped it off!

Heh. You make it sound so easy - just find a magnificent subject for the photo, and wing the background. Why didn't I think of that? *doh*
I wasn't talking about the quality of my lens but just the number of them I have.
Test.

Those two photos (the original and rip off :P) are excellent.

Here is one I did for a past bokeh challenge. It's not very well executed but I still like the concept.

Also, while were still doing the whole self promotion thing...

This is my entry for Bokeh V.

So, my understanding is that there has to be a subject in focus? The whole thing can't be just bokeh.

You have 2 very good storytelling shots here. I esp like the use of bokeh (like I know fer gawdsakes) in the rose comp.

This was in Sepia, but would qualify I think.

This would qualify quite nicely in both of the current exclusive challenges.

Yah, my stinkin' timing is impecable! :P (House has since been torn down so can't revisit!)

Here's one where I forgot to take the camera off manual focus.
If only I had an outstanding subject for it :)

Bokeh Filter

that good sir would be illegal

Tasteful, however... that is a different question!

Didn't say I was going to do it :-)

I don't believe that's illegal at all. That is a filter for a lens, not post processed.

I saw this earlier today and I thought you could kill two birds with one stone...door knobs, locks & bokeh...hmm

Catch up, number 10, we agreed that it was a legal camera filter ages ago... ;op

This is gonna be another messy one...

Really wish I had read this about a week ago

Lots of creative opportunity with this

Well if you look at top three images from past Bokeh challenges, ALL but one had a flower, a bird, a frog, or a leaf.

'Bokeh' to general DPC crowd equals 'flora/fauna on a creamy background'.

Expecting an applaud on anything else here would be foolish;-)

It was exciting to see how many used a dandelion in their photos!
They are one of my favorites!

Real bokeh is hard to find in the past challenges, most had DOF, would you agree with this ?

Well everything has a depth of field :) But it's pretty hard to get bokeh without a shallow depth of field.

My "circle of confusion" is why a bokeh challenge would ever be run under Advanced Editing. That really takes the emphasis away from technique and quality glass and pushes it to the postprocessing messing around. Correct me if I'm wrong, but previous bokeh challenges (in the series) were all Basic Editing. I mean, it's okay to shift to Advanced, but it will be a different ball game.

Bad? Not really....you tried something different...a nice change from an otherwise predictable challenge....

You mean this one?

What can be done in Advanced editing that can't be done in Basic editing as it relates to the actual bokeh being enhanced?
