My 4 1/2 year old daughter want an RC car from Santa. She wants one that will go fast, drive up ramps she makes, and probably the curb. It needs to last and not fall apart.

Any suggestions?

Thanks,
Paul

In the RC world you can have fast and durable... just not at the same time.
Anything with enough power to be speedy, has enough power to destroy itself.

But, speedy for a 12 year old girl, is probably a bit different than speedy for a 38 year old man :)

Just for a guess, what are you looking to spend on one?

Avoid the very cheap ones - if they hit the curb they normally do not survive as one of my grandsons demonstrated to me!

All I know is that if you have pets, kids under 6 (and men over 40) will use the RC toys to terrorize them.

I love RC! So much better than Coke & Pepsi.

From my own experience, chances are you'll end up driving it, she will get bored in a week or two.
So get yourself a decent model. :)

I love Royal Caribbean, too! Better than Carnival and Norwegian. :)

Actually, I do enjoy the RC cars and planes, too. Air Hogs have some fun RC stuff, but the planes are probably a bit much for a 4-year-old. I'd agree with avoiding the cheapest of the cheap, but my daughter has had an RC car that lasted a long, long time, and it still works just fine today. Unless your daughter is particularly destructive, I'd bet you'll get a long time out of them. And they've come down in price and gone up in capabilities over the years... they're really a bargain now, generally speaking.

This is great fun, I'm always playing it when I'm in the toy shop;

Buy here a Traxxas Short Course truck... I have one and the damn thing is pretty much indestructable... Here is a photo

These trucks are a blast, they are really quick and can be had for about 200$ with everything you need to run. The biggest upside is that they are currently the most popular vehicle, so parts are available at every hobby store under the sun in case you do break something.... Any questions just ask. I have 3 nitro cars, this truck, 2 nitro boats, 1 electric boat, and a helicopter...So I've been around R.C. for awhile...

Okay, upon edit, I missed that she was 4 and half, but on the upside this truck has a training mode for kids that cuts its throttle in half so they can learn...

You should see if you can pick up a used Predator at a government surplus sale ...

Its an Air Hog? Thanks, I'll look into it.

She's not destructive; basically, she'll use it properly if we show her how. There will be an obvious learning curve and I don't mind if it breaks, as long as it can be fixed. From what I understand, once the cheap ones break its fodder for the recycling bin.

Go to www.stormerhobbies.com and look up Losi trucks. I just got my sons Mini LST trucks and I have had one for a couple of years. They rock , they are fast and extremly durable.

This kind of Rc truck, just might be perfect for her. It has a training mode, limiting the power to fifty percent. So perfect for a new driver. Plus, the reviews state it is very durable and quick.
It is also ready to run. So just charge the batteries, apply some decals and good to go! Take a look through this site, it has lots of options.

Here's a clip from a stock truck. So not to bad, for out of the box. Heck, I would have fun with it! Also many upgrades are available. So if you need it to go 60 mph, you're covered...

Its a cheap little ebay camera I got for like 20$... It looks just like this...

//cgi.ebay.com/RC-Airplane-Helicopter-Mini-Video-Camera-spy-camera-/270668206789?pt=Radio_Control_Parts_Accessories&hash=item3f051512c5#ht_1139wt_907

Its surprisingly good... I had to scale down the video for youtube, but video straight out of the camera looks really good... I put it on my helicopter and flew it the other day and it worked well too, just haven't had time to get that video up...

Thanks everyone for the great links. The Traxxas looks perfect, but a bit more than I was hoping to spend. I was hoping to keep it around $100 if possible.

I asked her a few questions yesterday. I asked her where she saw the car she liked, what size, etc. It turns out, she liked the one the neighbor had which was a small 6" or so Walmart type car.

Then, she said she wanted hers to do tricks, roll over, and turn into a helicopter. Ok...she's 4 and really doesn't know what she's talking about there. :) heh heh....

Anyway, I just need something that will hold up to some beginner abuse and hold her interest.

I think I'm getting a better idea of what is out there. Thanks everyone.

Look at the 1/18 scale trucks, may be better for her... they are simply smaller... This one would almost fit your budget, is durable, and wicked fun to drive...

//www3.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXXYL9**&P=ML

The smaller size is better for children because they can do less damage with it... Trust me, I've been hit at full speed by a 1/10 scale and it hurts...LOL... Anyway, this truck is loaded with features, like a 2.4 ghz radio... which means you can drive it around any other R.C. car/boat/truck/plane and not have to worry about signal interference... If 130.00 is too high, you may be able to find it with a standard crystal frequency radio for cheaper... Best of luck...

Only $20. You can spend the $80 change on Christmas booze.

I'm not sure about cars but I flew RC Helicopters for 6 months and it only cost me $1500...

I just bought a simple one, for about $30 from Toys-R-Us. If she really likes it and gets into it, we can look at other options for her birthday or for next year. We got her so many other things it wasn't worth going all out for an RC car at this point.

We had a wonderful Christmas by the way, less my daughter coming down with a 104° fever...
