wow it seemed to me that every photo met the challenge to me... although some took a bit of thought. Definately not photos you could vote on without looking at them for a bit. Good luck!!! dont forget to leave those comments...If you folks feel as srongly as you do about this why not tell the photographer why you thought the photo DNMC...

To me all of the comparison photos are not an anachronism. I don't know. Is that too harsh on my voting? I think puting something new and something old next to eachother is not the same as something misplaced in time. And that is the bulk of the photographs.

I don't agree. If one of the items is clearly the intended anachronism, it's fine.

But if there is something old and something new next to eachother on a plain background... then which really is the intended anachronism? There is no setting to give perspective.

If it were a contemporary vs. a non-contemporary item, I'd consider the latter the anachronism. (eep, maybe i better go take a better look at what's there!)

I'm taking a very hard line here but I see a true anachronism as...let's say a T-Rex Climbing up the Empire State Building ( even better than King Kong on a scale of 1-10).

That's pretty extreme but the rule still holds as to what an anachronism is and many if not most of the images are terribly contrived. A few of them are passable IMO and maybe I'll go as high as crediting 10 images that meet the Challenge.

BTW...I'm not looking for dinosuars here but real things...the more natural, the better and taking something old and plopping it next to something new...doesn't cut it.

I wish there was a direct corollary with my score and the rise in the number of people I just pissed off....hehehehehe

Do I win! :) Christ, I knew mine was a bit of a stretch, but I didn't think I'd be working on a new personal worst. (And my free study entry, which I had high hopes for, is in the toilet as well. Oy... where's the asprin?)

I agree with you. I don't see why it would piss anyone off. You are just going off of the definition of anachronism which was given in the challenge descpription.

Someone left me a comment and said mine clearly was not I understand it to be

a person or a thing that is chronologically out of place; especially : one from a former age that is incongruous in the present

out of date style, out of date dress. a teenage boy dressed in a leasure suit?? What am I missing...
04/02/2007 03:01:21 PM · #32
I think it is relative, if you just take a photo of a teenage boy in a leisure suit that is not really out of place by its self. Now if that leisure suit wearing kid were taken with a group of other teenagers who were dressed in modern tuxedos, then that would be anachronism IMO.

Pawdrix, I'm in agreement with you in principle, though I don't know if we should be discussing the details at this point. Maybe after the challenge?

Context? Just a guess, Weefan, since I don't know which photo is yours. Or maybe the person who voted just didn't get it.

I agree with you as well..."in principle" BUT when's the right time for voters to learn or understand what an anachronism is. In my case after I've had my ass handed to me in a Challenge is too late.

I don't care much either way to be honest. I was simply venting my thoughts. No biggie...I'll keep quiet.

edited to add: My entry isn't the best or perfect by any means but in comparison(IMHO)it should be doing a dash better. C'est la vida loca...

As long as we are not talking about a specific entry in the challenge, I don't see any harm. I always thought we could talk about a challenge while it was ongoing as long as we don't talk about specific entries.

Depends on the conversation. Technically, I don't think it's against any DPC "rules" to discuss a challenge while it's in the voting stage - however - many times the "discussion" turns into a "my definition is right, yours is wrong" scenario and often it appears that all of the bantering is aimed at steering the voters in one direction or another.

Personally I think all of this bantering should take place before voting. After voting starts let the photos (and the challenge description) do the "talking". :)

So I walk up to you and show you a picture of a young man in a leasure suit and thats not strange or out of place to you??? I think if you showed me I would say when was this taken? I am not discussing my entry for all concerned...just my understanding of what this is and using an example.

I agree with you on that. If the theme is "Time" and someone says in the forums "I'm automatically giving a low vote to any photo that shows a timepiece" -- I think that's too influential. On the other hand, it would only affect those who read the forums! ;-)

The wish list is a bit over the top cause I know I don't think I would really want this hangin in my house, but who am I to complain. (But then if Deb is reading this post then she knows exactly who I am to complain - 1783).

Been a while since any scores have showed up here. This IS a scores thread right? :-)

How's the score hanging Tim? Break 7 yet?

Let's just say that my image doesn't seem to be one of those that people are questioning as to whether or not it fits the challenge description. ;)

Please dont anyone take this the wrong way or get offended but use a bit of creativity we are all really artistic here. Use your imagination a bit. trying to split hairs over "what clearly is" and what clearly is not is insane. When the speed limit on the highway is 55 does anyone here ever go 56 or 57 or 65.

Point taken however it is not the viewers job to use their imagination, it's the artists job. And I think a lot of the images that are frustrating are the ones that maybe fit the challenge but clearly did not use any stretch of imagination. That being said there are a lot of good images in this challenge, but many of them fit perfectly while others leave TOO MUCH of a stretch. This isn't a free study and it should have to do with the challenge, that's the whole point.

I think you may be right. I shouldnt be expecting folks who view my photo to use their imagination.

Thanks and good luck

I thought time related to all time.
A day, a year, 100 years. Time is time.

But I guess I was wrong, I am getting killed. I will admit I really did not really understand the theme.
