I am NOT the one with this spider in the diagonal challenge but when I saw that one (whoever it is) I had to find out. What the heck is this spider? I thought this was a fluke with the diagonal zig zag thing on the web and that maybe it was how it repaired a broken web. then when I saw the one in the challenge having the same zig zags and obviously the same strange looking spider I just have to know. Can anyone help identify it? Is it poisonous? These two photos are the same spider just one is the top and one the bottom. Don't know which is which though.

It's one of the orb spiders, I'm sure, but I'm just about to search to find just which one (if I can) :)

I THINK- Argiope sp., tho' I haven't narrowed down the species yet. The zigzag piece of web is called a stabilimentum. (Still looking)

eta; It's not dangerous, may bite if handled, but not particularly toxic :)

Okay now I really have the creapy crawlies. I googled and looked at a lot of spiders but, finally have it figured out that this is an Argiope appensa and they were introduced in Hawaii and aren't aggressive unless you poke and bother them but their bite isn't dangerous. Okay now that I've asked and answered the question with your guiding me in the right direction of course....

shiver and goose pimples..... lifting feet off floor....

edit for grammer

This is an Argiope I slept with in Thailand. Something bit me on the leg one night (I assumed it was this one, but i don't really know) and ever since I have a 2" diameter bald spot on my leg. that was almost 2 years ago :P

2 years without hair regrowth? Where can I find some of these -- I know a lot of women that would love hair removed for that long. Pain, apparently, is not a problem considering the alternative methods. :P

Hehe. Sorry but had to mention it, that sentence struck me as really funny! (My mind is in the gutter today.) :-)

I think it's also called a banana spider. We had one living in our bushes this summer. I had to Google it after my husband poked it and it started bouncing its web like a trampoline. I thought it was getting up speed to launch itself at him. I guess they do this to scare away predators but donĂ¢€™t actually jump off the web. After that the poor spider was forced to perform this trick for all our friends.

Where I live we have one they call banana spider. It's really a Golden Silk Spider (Nephila clavipes)

The nickname for the one is this thread is "Writing Spider". Here are some examples of Argiopes on bugguide.net.

Growing up we have had these or a similar type growning in the garden. Mom always called it 'the garden spiders' and she wouldn't bother one since it kept the garden pest free. We kids called it the zipper spiders because of the zig zag. Its a very pretty spider with bright yellows on its tail end and about 3-4 inches from front to back (including the legs of course) I have always thought of this spider when I read 'Charlottes Web'.
