My simple point is that the critic should be careful. Certain styles of critique will cause loss of any credibility...

Most of the time credibility is earned through the doing instead of the talking :-)
Many times if I respect a persons skill with a camera..I will respect their opinion on my photograph. My respect of their photograph skills are not limited to the scores they receive here at DP Cahllenge by the way :-)
Admiration by your peers is a long standing goal among artists and disdain of the critique is as well....although it is a necessary evil whne going commercial :-)

Point well taken John.
I have another topic I want to discuss, but I am really afraid of being slammed if I bring it up.
Also, I was not complaining about my score. It did better than I expected and I think 6 was an fine score.

it's hard to give any of the comments credence, unless they (1) are signed, or (2) say "wonderful - best of the week!"

Zeissman,
You hit the nail on the head here for what it is about Zeissman that confuses me. You are one that I have pondered over, sometimes thinking you very rude, sometimes thinking you misunderstood, and sometimes thinking you made a good point. I've tried to figure out whether I misunderstand you, or read you right.
This is not criticism, only reflection. I know that it can be difficult to be consistent. I struggle with that myself sometimes. It seems more important to be consistent online because it's more difficult to be known entirely as a person. In person, nuances of voice, body language, etc help define your character. It's frustrating that we can't accomplish that online.
I think you were largely misunderstood in you intention in this post. I am one of the people, who reading along, misunderstood you. Now I understand that you meant only to open a discussion on the effectiveness of different types of comments and that you used Autool's consistent method as an opening. Of course, I hope you are able to see how the wording made it seem like a bit of an attack.
Anyway, this thread was helpful to me in getting to know you. Dawn |

Zeissman -- as a "wordsmith" in a previous life, I would encourage you to try and start your discussion threads with a brief overview statement. This would help establish the direction of the conversation, so there would be less chance of people jumping off on unrelated tangents (or worse, thinking that you may be in attack mode when you're not).
My only comment on the "critique by category" (the original discussion at the top of the this thread) -- I personally like to see comments that are less "canned". I like to write one or more sentences when I leave a comment, and hopefully the photographer will find my comment helpful in some way. Be careful of leaving comments consisting of only short sentence fragments -- these can be interpreted in so many ways (especially considering that English isn't everyone's first language on this website). Hope this helps...

Thanks, after re-reading the first post I can definitely understand how I got off on the wrong foot.
I should have asked how useful people found this type of critique, and what type they prefer. Perhaps they have a favorite critique.
I usuallly approach this as sitting in a bar and bs'ing with friends, but I think I need to be more careful. I wrote Richard another note yesterday trying to explain myself again.

Hard to get a point across sometimes with out hand and face expressions. Hope I wasn't rude sure didn't mean to be. :)

You mean like calling someone's photo an illegal Photo Shop edit hackjob? |
