Hello DPC community,
Is it possible to turn a photo like this:
into some kind of line-drawing which would print out in black & white? Specifically, I want some kind if image of tree-like objects on the front of programs for my upcoming wedding - so I need to come up with something simple that will photocopy well. Mainly I want the trees to pop out - minimal background.
Tips, tricks? Is this not a good photo to start with? I have GIMP and at work I have access to Photoshop Elements - I am not experienced with either but now is as good a time to learn as any.
Many thanks! |

Something like: ?
(Note: I'm really crap at this sort of thing).
I just bumped up the contrast, did a filters -> edge detect -> neon then inverted and desaturated..
This would work quite well with a single tree isolated on white, if you could find a pic of a single tree sitting in a field of snow it'd be ideal.. Something like a big old oak even better.
(edit: forgot, Gimp 2.2 on Linux)

This is as close as I could get.
transform - perspective
pumped the contrast and tried to bring out mid tones.
converted to greyscale
filter - chalk and charcole
Not sure it will copy well, might be too much clutter at the base of the trunks to really see the trees.
Try the Artistic and Sketch filters
Photoshop 7, But I think there are the same filters in elements.

Link edited in in place of large pic.
Pshop 7
Adjustment layer > levels > drag the end triangles inwards a lot more than one would normally - thus reducing the number of greytones.
Filter > stylize > find edges
Image > adjustments > contrast (90%+)
Image > mode > grayscale
I'm sure there are better ways of doing it, but messing about with the tools above gets you near (?)
Call me Idiot - edited to apologise for not having read your situation vis-Ã -vis software...

Thanks for all the replys - I'll take a stab at some of the suggestions - and root through my library for a more isolated tree. |

I tried to give it an old-time illustration look, like an etching, engraving, or woodcut.
I copied the Red Channel to a new Grayscale document, then applied two Curves adjustment layers, converted back to RGB and saved as JPEG.
