I had journeyed into London to take some photos of St Pauls Cathedral for the Holy Places Challenge but discovered that no photography was allowed! Anyhow, I decided to seek permission from the Chapter House and they very kindly granted it to me, but on the basis that the photographs were for personal use only and not for any form of gain. Given the time and effort that the stewards gave to allow me to take the photos I did not think it right to enter them for the challenge but figured folk might like to see them anyhow.

More details with the full size photos.

Any comments gratefully received.

Carl

PS Re-posted after the end of the scoring for HOLY PLACES which had some really good images

Nice shots, ragamuffingirl. And they are the out-takes - sigh

I didn't think any of them were good enough for the challenge, I sat this one out. Then, when I was voting, I was like... I might as well have participated. I couldn't have done any worse than I usually do.

Looking at the entries I think you internal shot would have done well: it is certainly my favourite of the bunch. I guess we will both never know how well - or badly - we would have done on this challenge!

I have previous shots of that archway that are in black and white because of high noise. I was very excited to go back and shoot that church again with my 30D because I could actually use 800 ISO. But, I 1) Wasn't satisfied, 2) I was concerned that because of the previous pictures of the same subject, everyone would know it was my entry.

lovely shots. it's too bad you didn't get a shot of the floating dome. wren designed the dome to be self supporting, but the church decided it would fall down. they insisted on him placing columns to support the dome. if you look at the top of the columns - the dome does not rest on them. i guess he had the last laugh...

The Wren story on this one is quite incredible. Evidently, the church authorities wanted total austerity and banned any colourful images inside the cathedral, probably as it was seen to be too "Papish". However, there were colourful images commissioned in later years, including the mosaics in the Quire. An interesting place for sure.

Shot of a cathedral in Pittsburgh, PA. I liked how the light almost made a cross shape.

I headed out to get pictures of this churh but ended up using the mirror church instead. So I ended up taking this snapshot with my in-laws in it.

This is what we call a Stavkirke
