I have just installed a Hitachi D220MT 160GB disk to my computer. After installing it, the computer immediately told me that new hardware was found, after restarting the computer. In the device manager the device is working properly as well.

However the device is not showing up in 'My Computer'. Anyone have any ideas of why this might be or how to fix this?

I thought that maybe I have to map it or something, or change some properties somewhere, but I can't find anything.

I have tried add new hardware in control panel as well, but that again tells me that the device is working fine.

Thank you so much.

If you have a windows start up disk, you can run a little utility called FDISK, this allows you to mount the h disk on the system, and set the partition as active, once done you should be able to format the drive and then it will be useable
It is a little complicated and would prob be best done by someone with a little bit of knowledge

Further to my reply, windows control panel will be showing the drive as working because basically it is working, its just that until it has been partitioned and set active and formatted, its not useable

Brand new drive or 2nd add-on drive. HD should have included software. I have just purchased a 2nd drive just for pictures and PS scratch disk usage.

Your drive is correctly installed, but is currently not initialised or formatted. If you're running windows XP or 2000 you can set the disk up from within windows.

Try this:

Go to
Start ->
Control Panel (then click the option to go to "classic view" if you're looking at a blue window)
Double Click - Administrative Tools
Double Click - Computer Management
On the tree at the left side of this window expand "storage" by clicking the little "+"
And click "disk management" when it shows.

You should now see the new disk (probably labelled as "Disk 1" in the lower area of the right pane. It should say "Unformatted" or something similar.

Right click on the graphic bar where it says "unformatted" and choose (I think) "Create partition". You should then be able to follow the wizard to format the disk up as NTFS and give it a system drive letter.

Unfortunately I don't remember the exact wording of many of these options, although I do this all the time I don't think I've ever taken the time to read it =)

I have over 20 drives sitting here all bought new. Not one ever came with software. Just use the Windows disc to format the drive. Pretty simple.

Thanks all, it finally works :) Zorba I followed your instructions and I now have a new 160gb F drive.

I know that most people that install their own drives would know a lot of this stuff, but it still surprises me that a store bought HD would come with no info at all.

Its all good though. I am very happy and I have learnt something new today.

Thank you all again, I really appreciate your help :)
