Would you consider this to be a good b&w conversion

Speaking of it as a straight conversion, yes. It's very nice for tonalities. But there's a lot of flaws in the image itself, sharpness leading the list and the "blob" close behind.

looks like slight motion blur

Yea I noticed the blur. Not really sure why it came out so

IMO the B&W looks a bit dull toned. But I just like a bit of darkness, could just be me:

I used Fred Miranda's B&W Pro in Photoshop 6. Blue filter with step 3 added dynamic range.
You can come close by using the channel mixer to mix to monochrome with Red -50, Green +100, Blue +50. Just tweek the numbers until you go nuts, so many variations.

Hey I like this one

I agree with Azrifel. The b&w needs some more contrast to it.
The darker mod suits it better IMO.

What you guys are dping is improving the pic, no question about it, but I make a distinction here between effecting a conversion and then post-processing it to gain effect. My comment that rhyno had made a fine conversionw as meant to say that it accurtaely portrays in gray tones the full range of the color image and closely mimics it; it's a "good" conversion in that sense, and this isn't easy to do.

In general, when I am making conversions of anything but landscapes I start by trying to capture a "perfect" grayscale rendering of the color original, and then I go on from there seeking my effects and added emphases etc. With landscapes I almost always start with the assumption that I want to lighten greens and darken blues, so use green-channel-dominant channel mixer to effect my conversion.

Bear music, thanks for articulating what I originally attempted to do with the photo. That said what Azrifel and Gringo did to the photo give me a different view of doing things. Although I like Azrifel over Gringos. Just my preference.

The thing I find I am doing when bring a photo into software is trying to make it resemble what I saw at the time it was taken. Weather this is good or bad I dont know. Although I do know images on this site score much higher in challenges with a more glamour look to them. Good or bad again I dont know. A lot of the images look very beautiful but not very realistic. I also know this is a little off the original message I posted, just rambling at the moment.
