Nope, judging from past ribbon winners this isn't new -- but it does make it official -- the sky has already fallen. :(

Am I the only one that sucks at PS, and still doesn't care about this? Oh well, we don't need to rehash the ol' editing debate. :-)

don't mean to be dumb(its just the way i was born) but is an effect like swirl allowed now where as it wasn't before or is it that fillters and effects are allowed as long as they don't duplicate, create, or move major elements of your photograph.
thats my only Q thanx to any1 who can shed some light on it.

Nope, still not allowed, since it moves major elements around.

You could always use them, but not "too much." That is now made explicit, but again, don't use them "too much." There is no definition of "too much" -- for each photo it is subject to a vote of the SC.
As a possible example of "Not too much" I used a "light" application of the Dry Pastels filter to this -- it was during the same time as the Impressionism challenge, so I was hoping people would be in a frame of mind to accept it.

Why does the camera have to be set to my local time? As I am in Australia, the other side of the planet to east coast US I work out I miss out on 32 hrs of challenge time. 16hrs at the start beacuase the challenges don't start until 4pm. then 16hrs at the end because my finish date ends that amount of time before east US. can someone please try and explain this to me? If my maths is wrong let me know.

It's simply the convention we use. Most folks want their date and time to be correct for their own use (outside of DPC) so that means setting it correctly for your local time. If a submission comes into question, we can easily correct for the user's time zone offset from the server.

It seems to me that being set to the server time would be to your advantage. As it is, the challenges run for the same number of hours for everyone. I am on the same time as the challenge, but because I am usually in bed before midnight, the logic would be that I also lose 8 or so of the first hours of the challenge, and some hours at the end.
If your time/date stamp is NOT set to the local time, and we, as the SC, see that your picture was taken in Australia, but is "in" the time frame (on either end), you run the risk of being dq'ed because we do take into account time zones, etc.
I am very tired, so if this does not make sense, I'll try to clarify later.

One important reason it needs to be set to your local time is so your timestamp will match your environment. A sunny afternoon shot with a timestamp of 23:45 will "arouse suspicion."
That's also a reason you can't submit an entry without listing the location of the shot. Basically, location, timestamp, and environment all need to be local to where the picture's taken -- we will adjust to "server time" to see if the photo's taken within the allowable time frame. |

Wish I'd read this thread earlier. My first submission could have used a bit of PS work, but I thought cloning or airbrushing were not permitted, so I left a flaw.
Guess I'll know next time *grin*
Thanks for the clarification.
