Very good idea - and I love the capture of the water . . but this doesn't quite work for me and I'm not sure why . .

It might be the crop . . it might have worked better with colour . . but it just seems (for me at least) that this could have been even better, even stronger, with more punch and zing (whatever they are) :- )

. . yet I still like it.

Great shot but the background reminds me of a studio shot... I d prefer to see a more natural background for this "action" shot! BW and Water drops works well! 6

GREETINGS FROM THE CRITIQUE CLUB

First, I have to compliment you on your profile pic. Fun. Then, I see you have no qualms about asking people to take their pictures. This is a gift. You have it, congratulations. You can put this gift to good use in photography. Your Riverfront Skater is a fine piece of photography.

Okay, now to work. I have little to critique in the technical arena here. Your subject is placed well in the frame and the bike is a gem. I would suggest that a little fill-flash would have done wonders for the guy's face. But you were there, I wasn't. He might have objected to a flash going off in front of him.
Is the background a little busy? Well, yeah. It does tend to compete with the story of the guy with the bike. What would have happened if you had gotten lower to the ground? Was there another picture there that would also be compelling? I think what I am getting at is the story. The guy and bike is competing with the background arch and architecture. That may have been what confused the voters and caused a low score. Or maybe not.

All I can do here is toss out ideas. You're good. You will find your route to superior photography. And I look forward to seeing more of your work on DPC.

I hope this little critique was helpful to you.

Hi Joshua, greetings from the Critique Club!

Regarding your photo:

Composition
First of all, good usage of a fisheye lens. It's difficult to take advantage of the distortion factor of such a lens, but in this case you made it revolve around the post, where the Main Str. sign was. You got it all to fit in the photo, with a lot of breathing space.
The man at the right was not totally in the photo, and this just makes it a bit awkward.

Technique / Processing
Very nicely done on the reflections on the windows, it adds a new point of focus to the shot.
Good exposure, the toning is great.

Overall
A photo that has probably too much going on, since you've got a lot of details that in the end don't add to the purpose of the challenge.
Although it's a Main Street challenge, people were expecting to see the actual street.
Still, a 5.64 score and 26th place is not a bad place to be :)

If you have any questions feel free to contact me.
Regards,
Joao

Toe clips, friction style stem shifters, this bike may be the same age as the rider. No helmet, however. Tsk, tsk...
