Comment by bradshaw:
Its a very busy image and with black and white images its best to go with more with simplistic imagery. the right side with all the dark trees takes away from the actual subject matter of the climber. a tighter drop in my opinion would strengthen the image. It would have been cool if you had shot the image closer to the climber so it was just all rock and then the climber holding on.

Love the lines and composition. I think the contrast is good where the trees are as it works well with silhouettes, but maybe a bit to strong elsewhere in the frame. Just tone down the contrast a bit and maybe lighten just a tad and you would have had a stunner. I do like the setup, the perspective is refreshing.

subtle and beautiful- nicely done! :)
i love the curve of the nose, and that it is so soft and subtle; i love that there are no harsh tones int his image, its very nicely done- and I know that it is a nose withot the title, the other thing I like is that your tonal range on the nostril could be taken either way (ie forward, or sideways because there is only one nostril captured and the shading is done in a creative way!) beautiful!! -- ~10~

Damn, i don't think i anything needs to be said after surfdabbler. He pretty much nailed that critique. The high contrast makes your climber blend in with the rock/leafs below him, and your spotter blends in with the trees to much this way also.

Hi Kei. Here's a critique for you...

I think the comments have already covered this one. BW shots in particular need good large areas of light and dark to define the composition. This photo is all high contrast detail. Half close your eyes and stand back from your computer and it's hard to see anything in this image. Even sitting close, it took me a bit to figure it out, and I didn't even see the climber at first. He's the focus of the image, so the viewer's eye should be drawn to him first, and then be allowed to wander around the other details. An image needs large detail as well as small detail. If left in colour with less contrast, perhaps the blocks of colour will help to define it better? A closer viewpoint would help, preferably without the harsh backlighting. The wide lens could do some really great shots of this. I like the spread-limbed pose of the climber, which would be enhanced if you got really close to him and cut out the trees/mats/other person. You do have some other better climbing shots. :)

The B&W is good with nice overall contrast and impact, but the image is a bit too busy and the subjects are small. Plus, on of the subjects is very dark so doesn't really capture the interest, and the other one has no tonal separation from the rocks behind.
