Bloomingdales Candid 1

Comment:
This is an amazingly good candid shot, and the use of b&w is the perfect choice for this. The framing so that the background face echoes the main subject is either very well spotted, or incredibly good luck :o) Perhaps a touch more light on the jacket would have helped, but given that its a candid I know that you would have had little control over that. I am curious however as to what the background is, since the edges of it are very clean, and there appears to be a foldline down part of it...

Cleverly done :o) Perhaps a second light on the righthand side would help balance the image, and a slight adjustment on the crop so that the rightmost holly leaf isnt as close to the border might help too.

Good choice of subject matter in this shot, but I feel that it has let down in several areas - the lighting is very bright and has blown out some of the highlights, the main surface and background are a bit distracting, and the marble with some interesting surface texture (the cracked-looking one in the middle) could have made a good central focal point, if placed closer to the front of the shot.

A good portrait shot, and the lighting is nicely even. I personally would have cropped the righthand side of this shot more, so that the child's head isn't as central, and perhaps brightened the shot a little more, but doing so without losing the textures would be tricky.

Light Tower

Comment:
Hmm.... what can I say about this one... :o) Hmm.... the tower could do with being rotated about 1 degree clockwise, since the main grey/white boundary line is very slightly angled. Other than that, the composition is good, the colours contrast well against the background sky, and the RoT is observed to reasonably good effect.

The circular markings / highlights on the paper are a good continuation of the circles of the central object, but it really needs a bit more contrast to make them stand out. A squarer crop might also help here.

wet leaf

Comment:
The colours in this shot are great, giving a good contrast between the leaf and the background. The diagonal of the leaf is also good for leading the eye into the shot, but the waterline along the top of the frame is a bit distracting. A slightly deeper DoF would get all of the leaf in focus, including the nearside, which I think would help this image.

Comment:
The composition of this photo is good, but the lighting doesn't help highlight the water droplets on the lemon skins, and the crop & angle means that a potentially interesting reflection off the surfacetop has been lost. I'd also suggest using a second light from the righthand side, to help bring some warmth to the colours.

Maybe I Can Sneak Into DPC2

Comment:
A fun portrait and good use of magic-hour lighting. The only thing detracting from this image is the background, but since the subject fills most of the frame, it isn't too much of an issue.

The softness of the ball, combined with the mix of focus on the middle branch, makes my eyes water trying to focus properly - there doesn't appear to be a clear focal point to the image either. However, the colours and background contrast really make the ball jump out.
