First reaction, blah. Further look says ooh, nice spot too bad the photo is so blah. THird reaction, hey, I bet this could be seved with photoshop. how about turning it all sepia like this one? or make it all golden like this?

Work oh your post processing skills, photography today depends heavily on on the computer just like photography in the past required skill in the darkroom. Less messy these days.

I like the perspective very much. Too bad there isn't a bit more colour or warmth in the wood.

I love the composition of this, and the subject is one that really appeals to me. There are a couple of things, in my view, that could have improved it even more:
1. The focus seems soft - two possible reasons spring to mind, either it is hand held at too low a shutter speed and a bit of camera shake has been introduced or you are focussing a little too far in to the photo. It may be worth spending a litle time reading up on hyperfocal distances - I struggle with it a bit myself, and am not the best person to explain! The effect of the soft focus is that the texture of the wood, which would add considerable ineterest, and increase the feeling of depth, has not been brought out.
2. I like the subdued colour palette, ad there are some wonderful shades in the water, but overall the photo lacks punch and would benefit from some levels adjustment (or if it has had some, a bit more tweaking), nothing major, just subtle adjustments.
Do bear in mind this is very subjective, and is just my opinion, so do take it with a pinch of salt!

a little unexciting in the colors, seems OOF; dark left corner keeps pulling my eye there but there's nothing to see

I love the way the red tones of sunset bring out the trunk of the tree. That's my favorite part of the picture and I like that the trunk and the moon take opposing sides around the center of the photo. I also like how green the dark area is, since it contrasts so well with the red. Nice muted tone for the sky. A very pleasant photo to look at. Nothing striking about it, but I could imagine using this and your intercoastal photo to help me meditate... :)

My first reaction is... too brown for a landscape. I know it has a nice glow to it, but it's not quite "golden". I don't mind dirty, muddy tones, but there's no interesting composition here to redeem them. It might be more interesting if the water weren't exactly the same as the sky.

What I like about it is that it's a peaceful, sleepy picture.

If you would have waited about 3 minutes longer you'd have a nice sunset glow and lighting. With the use of HDR available you could have even brought back some foreground if desired (after waiting 3 minutes for the sun to set the foreground would be darker yet). As is, the sun is a bit too blown out for me. I'm also not seeing a strong subject theme. The river forms a nice leading line, but it takes you to the center of the frame. The brush and distant shoreline to the left aren't adding as much to this composition as the nice golden glow on the water to the right does. I'd emphasize the right side more via repositioning yourself at the time of image capture or in cropping while post-processing. Try to get the horizon more off-center as well.

All JMO of course. :D Good luck in the challenge.

David Bowie eyes... you have exaggerated the effect by putting so much emphasis on the eye of sky. the earth-eye is rotated half out of view. The result is disorienting in a Cubist-painting sort of way. I see two dogfaces, one for each eye, that don't quite match up. I like that effect.

But maybe that big hot spot on the top of his head is too much? It draws a lot of attention to itself. I realize that some of the detail is probably forever lost, but you can still make it less bright (maybe burn it), and brighten up the rest of the photo.

But even just as it is, I find this image compelling. A great abstract jumble of black and white shapes surrounding this one big glowing eye.
