Wow that's a really cool looking highschool. Your perspective makes this look like some kind of grand old mansion out in the middle of nowhere. I love how the lighting highlights some of the details and that you can see a bit of it shining thru under the archway.

a delightful smile and a wonderful pose - i am just not sure of how close the background tone is to her skin tone

Comment by Melethia:
Very good portrait! The background is good to provide the context and the sky is fine - not so featureless as to be distracting, nor is it overpowering. I would have liked to have seen the other hand a bit more. The use of the lines behind is excellent - adds strength to the composition.

This is really a good character portrait. Since the background is out of focus, I don't think the lack of detail in the sky detracts at all. The depth of field is just right with your subject perfectly in focus. Being in landscape layout helps tell the story a little more than if this had been tighter in using a portrait layout....(hope that makes sense).

Nice portrait of a captain! I really thinkt he compositon works well here. i'm not bothered by the crop of the hands and I like the lines of the sails leading you to the captain. Great bokeh and contrast along with a confindent pose bring this all together. I second that this would have been a nice portrait for the enviromental portrait challenge.

Oh, I LIKE it! I'd love to do a photo shoot with just that guy. One of those character shoots showing all the lines and wrinkles and stories in the eyes. And speaking of stories, I love the story that the ship, the water, the black and white tones tell in this photo. You feel like you are looking at something from a different time.

This could be used in the Environmental Portrait challenge. He makes for an interesting subject. I bet some dodge and burn would help the sky.

environmental portrait:) It would be nice to take it from a slightly lower angle just to avoid the background from "cutting" through his head. it is an excellent portait, the profile view and the angle of the light are great.

The sky isn't an issue for me, I was immediately drawn to the man. This has a great oldtime look to it and that pose is perfect for this type of shot. This is one of those shots that makes me want to see more of him, more of the ship.
