Eyes Wide Openby JudiComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Hi Judi!
Nice shot! I love the contrasts in this photo except one place - the beads that come down are grey. You've got great whites, good blacks and then these greys hanging around - it sort of tones down the "high contrast"
In portraits, I always try to get the eyes in focus. I get "soft focus" but in an advanced editing challenge, you could easily bring the eyes back in focus with the history brush or by using layers.
OOH, know what would really make this shot pop out? Unsharpmask settings of 20, 40, 0. Just try that. :D I see it! :) This is a great shot and with a 6, hopefully you're happy!
happy shooting

Old concrete mixing plantby gisliComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
Tooooooooo much! This was too good to do much better than it did. The tonal range doesn't skip from black to white. There are SO many greys and shades of grey in here. You didn't make an all-black, all white, so you were bound to be voted down.
The composition of this shot is stellar and the two lines tie it together very well. The only beef is the tonal range. Good sharpness! I like the shot - just not for this challenge.
happy shooting,

Off To The Racesby TommyMoe21Comment: Greetings from the Critique Club
I'm with the crowd on this shot. I love it, I'd love it a bit more if it were a hair sharper (1/800 really?)
I don't think this is high contrast, but I guess you know that. It's not brightness contrast and I'm not really sure with the track and the horse together that it's color contrast. If the horse was going by a car, maybe it would be subject contrast...as it is, I just don't see it.
(I'm also with coolhar- looks like Saratoga - Arlington must be beautiful).

Eye Am Watching Youby SchuffComment: Greetings from the Critique Club
I agree with some of your commentors and disagree with some. I think the eye should be in focus - absolutely. In a macro, I want detail. I want to see things that I can't normally see.
The high contrast is evident - but actually a main portion of this image turns out to be the shadow under the eyebrow and that's got great middle exposure. I know the white skin and black hairs are supposed to be the contrast, but watch what the rest of the shot does as well.
Good composition, nice subject. Just nail focus next time. |

Times Forgottenby phinbobComment: Greetings from the Critique Club:
This shot rocks. It's way underrated. I love the contrasts - the composition is great. I think the only thing that hurt this shot was the sky. The clouds almost look inverted and don't look "real" and definitely don't fit the mood of the rest of the picture.
This is a really nice edit - good capture and good finish. Too bad about the not-so-understanding average voter.
happy shooting!
