Just got one of these myself. A new one for me! Another very shy difficult to photograph bird.

The migration this year seems to be broken up. Went to Alamosa at the historical peak time and only saw them in the dozens. In previous years there were thousands, not sure why so few together this year.

Maybe reconsidering... Lincolns? Was thinking juvenile Swamp sparrow, but in hindsight not so sure. I have a few other pictures that may help. I'll try to post tomorrow.

On the fence with Rufous or Allens. Both are in the area, at the same time of year, and the markings are beyond similar. Went with the more common Rufous.

I got a better look at it, but this is the only picture that came out. Pretty confident in the ID, but not 100%. The under tail was my main thought, with the lesser goldfinch having a yellow under tail. This was in West LA, and as its warmer there earlier I think most of the birds have changed already, so I assumed this was a female. I "think" it was a tad smaller than the American Goldfinches that I see all the time, but distance can make sizing difficult, and it was solitary.
