Weathered Fence

A nice idea, but I think the perspective on the fence is just a bit too steep. If you'd taken one large step to the right, it would've worked a lot better, I think.

Lovely expression on the dogs face - a definite sense of being fenced in.

I would have taken the shot from lower, down at the dogs's level. Then in post-processing maybe played with the saturation levels of the reds and yellows, to bring out the colour of the dog more.

Very effective. I would have tried playing with the black-point to make the tree-line a little darker and maybe more distinct from the sky (particularly over on the right).

Kinda stretching the definiton of a fence, methinks...

Putting that to one side, canal locks have huge photographic potential. This one might have benefited from any or all of:
- being taken at a lower angle;
- using a much slower shutter speed (if you could find some way of stabilising your camera), to create a "mystic" effect from the water;
- tweaking up the saturation and contrast to bring a darker, older, more gloomy feel (locks are usually old, dark and gloomy places...)

There's a lot to this, that all comes together to make it "work".

Monochrome is always good for creating a sombre tone. The subject is mostly in the dark, except for her hand, which is creating a strong sense of "the light" being on the viewers side of the fence - she is imprisoned, not us.

The building in the background has a vaguely institutional look, too. wherever she's imprisoned, it's not a holiday camp.

Then there's the lip-ring, the lanky hair, and the expression of the subject. Wherever she is, it's ground her down. She's defeated, just biding her time.

The lighting on the hand is overdone, obviously. And the gadget that she's holding is distracting, as (to a less extent) is whatever it is intruding into the shot at top right. But overall it works well.

I love the way the fenceline leads the eye into the shot. The whole thing is very well composed, creating something very evocative of a rural english winter. The dark grey overcast sky helps with that! :-)

Nice bold use of colour - in both the foreground and background.

The sky gradient is pleasing to the eye. But nothing else really grabs me about this. Sorry.

Just the right sepia tone for this shot.
