Thank you for the comments. :-) This was taken at sunset. The egret was landing on the water, into the sun that was hovering just above the mangroves a short distance away, leaving them in dark shadow. With the egrets wings backlit and the water glistening in places, the exposure was already very low on the mangroves and the majority of the water surface. A bit of adjustment on Curves and a bit of Burn allowed the background to drop away completely. All in all, it was a pure luck shot. Right time, right place. ...was hoping it might have done slightly better than 5.9, but it's not a great quality image, so I guess it's pretty fair.

When I first looked at this, I thought it was a picture of a flying bird at night, and I was amazed. Now after further looking, I can see how this look might have been accomplished at sunset or sunrise. Still doesn't take away from the mystique and awe though. This is a breathtaking photograph. 8

Comment by Denise:
wonder how this would of looked with a long exposure so the water in back would be completely blurred

Looks like the Oscars statue is reenacting a scene from "The Fugitive"

An interesting piece of artwork you've come across here. The "back" seems not as well defined as the "calf/feet" area...maybe some selective sharpening would help (or a deeper aperture)?
