I like the camera angle and the idea for this picture but something isn’t quite right. It just doesn’t look natural, maybe it is the white balance? I also don’t like the way the light is reflecting off the label of the middle bottle. I know the lighting is very harsh in those refrig’s and that aspect of this picture is more accurate but I find the bright speculars to be distracting. I think the shot was well composed though. I gave it a 5.

This is an interesting idea, however I don’t find highlighters all that exciting. Clever picture though. I like the composition and technically the photo looks very well done. I just wish there were more going on here to hold my attention. I gave it a 5.

This is a pretty good picture but the green’s seem a bit washed out. I like the reflection of the trees in the water but would have liked this shot better if the group of lily pads was not quite so centered. Exposure and focus look good but this just isn’t quite enough to hold my attention. I gave it a 4.

Good use of green and DOF. The yellow background works for me but I don’t like the counter (or whatever it is) that the lemon is sitting on. Unfortunately there isn’t a lot to hold my attention here. I gave it a 5.

This shot meets the challenge well but isn’t much to look at. The lighting is a bit harsh for my taste, and I might have gone for a slightly darker green to make it more appealing (personal taste). Exposure and focus look good, just needs more going on. I gave it a 4

I think this is a great idea for a picture, and I really love macros. The problems that jump out at me are the lighting and the use of plastic. The lighting looks a bit harsh to me and might be improved by using a diffuser (even a piece of tissue paper in front of the light source can serve this purpose). Plastic is a bit harder to solve. I find plastic to be quite difficult to photograph, especially the softer plastics. I have found that camera angle is very important to making plastic objects look good. Something about the way it reflects the light just doesn’t look good in pictures. The other thing is to make sure all the surfaces are very clean and have as few scratches/imperfections as possible. I usually use latex gloves to handle objects when I am setting up a still life. You might benefit from greater DOF in this shot and a tad less exposure. There appears to be a lack of detail in the objects in the foreground and the highlights appear to be blown out a bit. You might try a smaller aperture and a tripod if you weren’t already using one. This subject matter would probably look very nice if it was illuminated by daylight through an open window. Good effort here, I gave it a 5.

Cool idea for this picture. What are those things? They almost look like they are made out of the same material as gummi bears. The composition and color look good to be but there are a few things that take a lot away from the picture for me. I don’t like the way the shadows look, but I do like the way the light is shining through the green objects in the lower right portion of the photo. I think some sort of diffuser over the light source would have helped. The other thing that bothers me are the faint reflections in the surface that the colored objects are sitting on. There are also some black spots showing up on the background that take away from the picture for me. Finally the picture appears to have been sharpened a bit too heavily. It might just be the monitor I am looking though, but it seems like some of the edges are either oversharpened or that there is some CA going on. I know this might sound like a bunch of nit-picking but I think if you pay attention to these small details that you will be very pleased with the result. Little things like the reflections and black spots drive me nuts when I am doing pictures like this, but I have never regretted going back and fixing these issues. It is enough to make the difference between a professional looking picture and a beginner picture. I am not saying that yours is a beginner picture either. I gave it a 5.

This picture would work as well for the symmetry challenge as it does for the color challenge. I like the soft lighting but I wish the lead duck was a bit sharper. I would also have cropped it to leave some space in front of the lead duck for him to swim into. It might have also helped to have a very diminished light source on the left side of the camera to illuminate the visible side of the ducks’ faces but not so strong to compete with the main light. I gave this one a 6.
