Building where A-bomb of Hiroshima exploded, (an Oops - we will never forget)by

I personally considered your photo very on-topic and a good reminder of a major Oops. Job well done!
Now, let's talk photography. Focus is good and the DoF you chose worked well for you.
Perhaps it's a little under-exposed, but this actually might work for the image, making it a little dark.
A little processing would have helped you get a little better score, but like you said, you didn't care about the score. You just wanted to tell a story, that's admirable. But, why not use the tools at hand to tell the story better by making the photo more dramatic? Higher contrast, darker tone ... things that would have taken seconds in post-process could have made a more dramatic statement.
My photojournalism background tells me that most of the time it's better to leave the image as captured. But, sometimes it's appropriate to add a little drama to the image, especially with an image that has the impact capability as yours.
Angle of atack:
The tree, while showing the "death" in this image, is somewhat distracting. It overpowers the composition. A slightly different point of shoot to minimize the tree's dominance would help the compostion a lot. Perhaps there is also too much sky in the shot.
Polarizer:
A polarizing filter would have been very appropriate for this shot. Making the clouds more pronounced and providing an atomosphere for the story you are trying to tell.
Overall, I like your way of thinking. I see what you wanted to say here and it is admirable. In that, I say good work. I look forward to seeing more work from you.
Take care,
Leroy
