Meets challenge very well: "... take a photograph whose subject is enhanced by the bokeh of the background." Nice!

This is darling, but I think it looks better with the boats cropped out.

Neat pic, but out of focus area does not really enhance the subject - I'd like to be fishing.

I like this composition. Perhaps the fellow is leering too much but he has an interesting expression. If I set this up the fellow would probably look dumfounded. Her smile is quite unique.. If you try this again, I think a strapless dress... showing nothing but skin might work... but you will play hell maybe getting that smile a second time LOL.. Can you digitally remove the white strap.. leaving the black one? I, personally.. at my age.. don't care for the nose stud but my daughter and neice have them..

The balance of the photos is excellent, almost perfect. The bottom right is something that could perhaps be punched up with curves and or levels, it's slightly distracting. The bridge and the sky are excellent, I find sometimes after taking a shot that it would be nice to take another crack at the framing as cropping doesn't always allow what you would like. A very confidant and well executed photo overall though, Good job!

I would recommend the 50mm 1.8 prime as perhaps the next lens to purchase for your kit, You will get tremendous sharpness out of it and it would be ideal for stuff like portaits or fixed objects etc. It is about $100 and far sharper than the kit lens. On the cheap one of the best and most rewarding lenses to buy. ("jay" was taken with this lens if you check my profile)

Best Regards,

Jesse

Interesting shot, I like the foreground composition alot. the contrast and framing is nice however I would either do the shot with just her, and something interesting in the depth of field portion. Something about your facial expression doesn't work with this, but I find I like the foreground enough to almost overlook that. I'm not sure what emotion your feeling It almost looks like a forced smile :) Anyhow I just thought I would leave a comment, as it caught my eye.

From the Critique Club

Hi- A pretty good portrait but there are a few things that should of been removed and a few thing that should of been added to make your shot work better IMO.
For example the first thing I noticed when I opened up your image was that you are hand holding the camera not using a tripod. That's ok but should not jump out at the viewer. If you would of cropped the right side I believe that would of help this issue but a tripod would of been the best giving you more range in your setup.
In a portrait photograph where the face is shown I believe the eyes are the key to success. Both people in your photograph have there eyes very dark not giving us a connection with them like it would of been if we were able to see the eyes. I would have suggested the eyes being brighter so we could see what direction they were looking.
The female has a very pleasant smile and very photogenic so more detail and contrast would of been great. I also believe a tighter crop may have helped.
You did a good job converting to B&W and the Dof is good.

Overall I think this shot would of been worth taking again with a tripod. Using the same B&W conversion but with a little more contrast. Do away with anything that does not enhance the shot and draw our attention to the elements that make the shot. Good photograph and I hope you find this critique helpful. If you have any questions concerning this critique feel free to contact me.

regards,
SDW
