Comment by Jutilda:
She's lovely. I like the landscape orientation much more for some reason.

I did not vote on this challenge either. I would probably have given this a 4 or 5. The eyes are beautiful and sharp. However, the top of the head is cut off--which I would not have a problem with if there was not so much shirt included. The background would not have to be solid, but having each side very different is distracting. Her complexion seems too red, but if that is her natural color then I wouldn't change it. Lighting is the hardest thing to master (I still have a long way to go), but think of the time you two can spend together while you learn! I hope we see her again!

I did not vote in this challenge. For what its worth, I probably would have given you a 6. I like the depth of field, the focus is perfect, and I like the crop (I don't mind the top of the head missing). However, the red tones to the skin are less than pleasing and the shooting angle (down) is not pleasing. People often shoot down at children rather than at their eye level - makes me feel like I am menacing them by standing over them as a viewer.

As for DPc, to score better: People vote higher for the whole head, they expect a plain background, they probably thought the words on the shirt distracting, and the red tone makes it seem more like a snapshot. They like 'high-school' portrait style here mostly, so anything that varies must be perfectly executed.

Hope that helps. You've got a very beautiful child with great eyes for photographing.

Hi Ziggy, yo asked for some feedback on this photo. Firstly, you have a very sweet looking grandchild, and those eyes and curls are gorgeous. The focus on the eyes is sharp, and I am so glad you didn't over-process them, as many on DPC have a tendency to. I feel you could have afforded a very slightly deeper depth of field, so that the front curl was also in focus. For me there were two things that struck me when I viewed this during voting - the slight appearance of 'dribble' which I always find off-putting (strangely I never seemed to notice it in photos of my own children..)and the composition. The cut-off head can sometimes work very well, but not, I feel, here. Also, I do find the background rather distracting - a plain and even one would, I am sure, have resulted in a more pleasing image. At the end of the day, there wasn't enough about the photo to keep my attention.
