Comment by KiwiShotz:

I would very much like to critique this image but can't.

If a Photographer clicks the critique box asking for someone to spend a lot of time analysing the image, then the very least the Photographer can do is to take the time to comment on their work and to share with others the process and technicalities of the shot.

I am delighted to share with those that also share.

Randall Rd. in Elgin/Algonquin? I work off of Randall Rd. Very nice reflections. I look for this on my way to work on Monday :)

Hmm, there's a Randall Road where I grew up....I'll laugh if you're from my home town :-) Nice serene shot. Perhaps a slight (very slight) adjustment to the levels would make the colors pop a little more, but you've done a good job with the sky.

Great colors! I'd like it more with less of a cyan and more blue in the sky.

Nice composition - I just wish that stick wasn't there - draws your focus away from the subject.

Comment by SJCarter:
As a fellow sushi lover, I can completely appreciate the subject matter's appeal. However, I think that the DOF and lighting in this particular shot detract from the otherwise very artistically attractive and appetizing characteristics of sushi.

There is a dull purple overtone to the whole image that is not only unappetizing, but detracts from the "wholesome" aspects of natural food. Also, the DOF is too shallow to allow the viewer to fully appreciate the intricate details inherent in any sushi roll - especially one with fish eggs.

I think that with more "white" reflected light and a deeper DOF, you could present this dish in a much more appealing manner. IMHO, whenever you photograph food, lighting is absolutely key. Not that I'm any expert on lighting - by any means - but I do know that in order to make something look appetizing, it has to have a certain color tone/glow about it.

Hope that my opinion was helpful...

This has wonderfully deep, rich color tones and I think the centered composition works well too. What hurt your score IMHO is the DOF - it was too shallow - it didn't allow for enough detail on the petals of the black-eyed susan. If more of the flower had been in focus, I think you would have scored a full point higher. It's still a really nice shot, but I think it could have been a whole lot more.

I love this shot. Nice juxtaposition of natural vs. urban. I also like the shallow DOF. If I could offer one suggestion, it would be to clone out the bright red "dot" in background and the small black speck in the sky. Nice work.

Nice colors, dof and texture. Interesting perspective in a challenge full of simular shots.
