Wow! I think this is the only entry that chose to desat the subject. I wish I'd thought of it. :^) Great subject and expression, very nice desat effect. One of my favorites for this challenge. Gotta love that slobber.

Hello from the Critique Club!

I like the idea you had for the challenge, but think you could have made a few changes to the framing or the choices for focus and depth of field to make it more strongly convey the sense of waiting.

For instance: I'd probably try a tighter crop that shows fewer days after the circled date. I'd also try a shallower depth of field to really add weight to the 12th. To me the pencil adds to the photo, but it is perhaps a bit too prominent - maybe less of it, or more out of focus would have been less distracting from the subject of the shot. My last nit would be the slight green discoloration on the table near the bottom center of the image - I think it stops your eyes there.

I like your use of color - the orange and red highlights on the calendar go nicely with the pencil and wood of the table. I also like the even lighting.

Feel free to critique my critique,
Ara

Thanks to everyone who voted and commented!

There seems to be some polarization on the subject of whether the security guard adds or subtracts from the shot. Personally, I liked him in it but could have submitted it either way - I have a clean shot without him after he crossed the frame. Actually, the guard was a pain (although very polite) because he wouldn't let me use my tripod. I got a couple of long exposures in before he braved the rain and asked me to put it away.

I like this shot, but I wonder if it would be better with a slightly wider DoF. I think I'd like just a little more detail in the next closest row. Either way, a nicely composed shot.

I like the angle and placement of the ball. I also like the gritty feel of the shot. It also looks like (at least on this monitor) a very subtle duotone coloring. Nice DoF too.

I guess I never really thought of boxing as a team sport, but this is a great shot. The texture and fine detail really stand out against the muted contrast in the background.

I knew I liked this shot when I first voted. Now that I'm revisiting it to comment, I noticed (for the first time--duh) the 3 second hands. I like it more now, and I'm upping my vote. Only complaint would be - starting the exposure 1 second earlier would have centered the second hand on the 3 mark.

I love the simplicity of this shot. The textures and colors really work well. Would love to have seen other angles, but then the structure of the shot probably would have broken down.

Nice. Love the contrast and the grainy feel. Would love to know your process/workflow for BW conversion after the challenge.

I really like the subtle differences in metal coloring. The neutral background really makes the subject pop. Looks a tiny bit blurry but not bad enough to take away from the shot. Oh, but I'll complain about the title - I can see 6 fingers, the 5 obvious ones and the nearly hidden pinky wearing the ring. :^)
