This is the sort of picture I would have chosen when looking for photos to head artricles for publication BUT the pencil would have been too central. I have moved the pencil up in Photoshop and left more space in the bottom left. It would then have great commercial prospects and I think unbalances the picture so it gives it more "PUNCH"

I like this and dark skin tones with lots of white in the picture are always a nightmare to expose. This was almost spot on. I like the obvious low light from the right side but find the big shadow distracting. A much tighter crop on the left and the top would leave all the elements still there - and as long as the plate is still there along with the shadows of the page there is still enough information to show the dramatic effect of the lighting.

Beautifully exposed and a lovely use of space. I would like to see it with the (sister) cropped out. The main character would still be far enough to one side for her to be looking into the centre of the picture. Would like to know if it was a "grabbed shot" or set up. If it was grabbed it was great. If it was set up - I would like to see some of the others.

A very difficult shot to expose and has achieved it well. If there was the time I would have taken another with a far wider aperture to have lost some dof in the background. Try cropping out the cupboard (I think it is) on the left. It competes with the light colour of the jumper and is off vertical.

Don't drink the green water!
Joking apart I think it would have improved it if you had clear water and a green vase. Mainly because if you look carefully at where the hand is gripping the vase it has flattened and sqashed the forefinger making it look uncomfortable. As it is so bright compared to its surrounding it also makes it obvious and distracting.
The blue highlight on the vase looks distracting -. I pulled it into photoshop and did some adjusting - replicating only what you could do in camera or with background - this is what I did
Got rid of the blue background on the right - creating an even background - that immediately too a little of the ptressure off the fingers. changed the blue highlight to white and darkened down the fingers. Finally changed the clear glass green and the water white.
Left the composition exactly the same and I feel it changed it from a photo to A picture.

I am a little concerned that the point of focus appears to be the cloth down in the bottom right hand corner.
I think it may have been improves by getting the pof on the central stand and allowing both bowls to be out of focus.
I like the composition and the material on the right. I think maybe you should have tried a few more variations on the theme - moving the camera a little more.

Nice shot but the background needs a little more care. Could do with a tad more contrast. Lots of potential just take another look with a more critical eye and give it another go

This almost worked very well. I am sure many others will comment on the same thing
"Care of your background"
The creases and particularly the line above the archers right shoulder ruin a potentially great shot. It looks, unfortunately like a "hanging sheet"
The graduation of light is nice - the semi-silhouette is great - the composition is great -
JUST THE BACKGROUND.

A good idea which has not quite worked.
What I think may have been "soft focus" has drifted towards "out of focus"
If it is a focus problem, it could have been rectified by stepping further back and taking the picture to retain focus and then cropping the picture to the same image.
It is a shame to see a potentially good picture lose it because it has not been taken carefully enough.
In most digital cameras now there is enough resolution to crop a considerable amount without losing image quality.
Try and reshoot it again and compare the difference.

I cannot make up my mind about this one -
It seems it would be better in a more photojournalist category -
It makes me think more of Gemini the twins than Cancer the crab and it just leaves me confused.
The challenge says "Take your best photo representing one of these signs" but even with the title I feel I am not seeing something. Perhaps it is too depply hidden. I am wondering if these girls are upset because someone has "cancer".
In a conventional "Print judging" competition I think this would have fallen at the first judging where a print gets a 2 or 3 second look and then put on the "reject" or "further consideration" pile.
It would have missed out not because of the technie, quality etc but on "does it meet the quidelines of the challenge".
I know there is a great debate on the forums regarding what some people interpret as "meeting the challenge". I however look at the challenges as requiring a very link - it can be obtuse but must still be obvious. I also believe the picture cannot rely on a title to bridge the gap.
There are a lot of voters on here that will balance my rather extreme ideas and so in the long run I do not think your overall score will suffer because at the end of the day its still a good photograph.
