As others have pointed out, the only real issue here is the clutter - The stuff on the fridge, the wires, the stove top, etc. Also, it's very crowded. Study set-up shots and you'll note they've made space for the subject. This might mean moving stuff around. Actually, it DOES mean moving stuff around :-)
Once you have a set up, look through your viewfinder and see if there is anything distracting in the background (shadows, something shiny, dust bunnies - backgrounds are very sneaky). Finally, don't assume that standing in front of the subject is the best shooting angle. get down low, step up on a stool, move to the left and the right, experiment with different points of view. Many times straight on is more powerful that looking down on something, simply because it is not a "normal" pov.
And congrats on your first challenge - an expert editing one at that!
