Hi there Michael, from the Critique Club. My very first impression on this photo is that the lighting is very harsh. It looks like it was a sunny day out, so not much could be reasonably done about that here.. except possibly moving to a uniformly shaded area, because the extreme difference in highlights and shadows (particularly on the face) aren't too desireable here.

I think a tighter crop and an angle other than straight on would also benefit the shot. Even if he were not looking at the camera here, a different perspective would really benefit the shot. Many of us are used to seeing people at eye level, and used to shots of people straight on like this. I think that giving a different perspective would certainly add some impact. That's about all that I can think of at the moment, and to each his own, but I hope you've found this helpful.
