A-peeling Apples

A-peeling Apples2nd Place

The bright background is a distraction. The peeled apple looks very good in the lighting provided, though, and I like the placement of the other apples in the scene. The cutting marks on the wood in the foreground sort of cheapen the effort you went through to set this up. A 75% crop beginning in the left center of the image and just getting the tool handle would have improved this. It's still a nice effort. 6.

This is my favorite kind of photography. You've captured a mood with this photograph excellently. It's a very charming scene that looks right out of the turn of the century. I wish only that the bowl and mixer weren't quite so centered in the frame. Perhaps zooming out a little and placing the bowl more the left would have helped. It's still a seven, since I'm a sucker for cookbook-ish photography.

A classic scene that definitely fits the challenge in our current era of technology (certainly wouldn't have been low tech 200 years ago). The movement of the wheel and water is awkward. I think you should have either bumped up the shutter speed and captured everything perfectly still or gone longer and had more motion than you have. Also, rather than have nothing in the foreground, I would have like to have seen some mossy rocks or something that lets me into the scene before, Bam, I'm presented with the watermill wheel. The sky and trees in the background add little to the scene. Crop them out and you have a much nicer shot. Hope that was helpful... :)

Fairly good composition, but one has to ask how well it meets the challenge of "Low" tech. I suppose the concept of low tech is a relative thing and, indeed, in 100 years I believe we will look back on the SLR camera and consider low tech. I like the crop of this picture but I don't like the darkness at the upper right in the background. I'd rather see a white background and perhaps a little colored light falling on the "Fujica" body. Good effort. 6

This is an interesting composition, but the actual size of the JPG is hurting you here. I think given a larger version, your score would have been a point higher on average. I commend the effort and the DOF (depth of field) is quite nice. The context of what appears to be a table saw in the background should be more prominent, to show the contrast between the new and old methods of sawing.

Very nice portrait of "Ambah", as Rob would say :p. Congratulations on the top 15 placement.

Pretty abstract. I pity your final score. I'm giving it a 7. I like the placement of the "thing" in the frame and the total lack of detail.

I like it. If I had more time, I'd comment on why I'm giving it an 8. As it is, you'll just have to accept my vote. :)

Interesting compostion. The inclusion of the foliage on the left is, well, unnecessary. Perhaps getting closer and making the s-curve in the bridge entirely fill the frame would have improved the shot. Also, you may want to explore bumping up the contrast a bit. The toning seems a little washed out.

Very nice. A tight crop such as this is a welcome addition to a challenge full of clunky backgrounds. I'm not sure whether the grain is helpful to the image or not. Jury is still out. His hair looks a little strange, though I imagine it's the nature of the exposure and the post-editing that was done. All in all, a strong and emotive image. 8
