Black subjects are always had to photograph, due to their... well, lack of color :) Many details are lost here, and since the photo is not very sharp neither, one would just say "another cat photo" and leave it. My suggestion to improve that kind of photo is to use a light source from one side. This way, the texture will produce small shadows, and will be much more visible.

when I see an image that is less than 800px ( on the long end) my first thought is " hmm, what is he/she trying to hide?"

You've used way too much JPEG compression when you saved this, and there are obvious compression artifacts showing around the birds in the upper right. The image as a whole has probably lost a lot of sharpness and clarity due to that compression as well.
