Hi Kate, welcome to the 'Critique Zone'! This is all completely subjective, so please take anything useful...

Overall, I am not sure where this photo is supposed to be taking me. I love your concept with the abstract crinoline - it gives you all sorts of lines and play with the light, but I am not sure it fits with the theme, and I think your capture could be 'tinkered' with.

Technically: Using such a wide aperture was an ambitious choice - limiting your depth of field to such an extent doesn't seem to have given you the choice about what to bring into focus and what to leave out. Sticking it at ISO 1000 also seems unnecessary - to achieve a decent shutter speed you could probably have used ISO 200 here and got a lot less noise, allowing you to capture more detail in the crinoline.

Artistically: As I said before, this is subjective. That said, I am not sure that you have picked something that looks better in negative - I did not initially realise that it was negative. If you had the opportunity to arrange the crinoline into curves or allow it to lead you in and across the photo, it might have been more appealing.

In summary, this is a great, abstract, concept. I think that with a bit more focus on what you want the viewer to see / think, this could be a great shot.

Hi Lucille, thank you for the crit! I was walking through the forest and this apple was just sitting there! I didn't have to manipulate composition.. and the light shone on the apple just the second I took this shot - I was waiting for it. There were two shots and this was the better of the two.

The c shaped branch is a distraction and I could fix that. However, I do like the triangular shape it creates and that was the deciding factor in not messing with the image too much - leaving it as natural as possible.

Thanks for the notes Lucille!!!

Greetings from the Critique Club

First Impressions:
When I first saw this I thought, "Don't touch it! It's a poisoned apple! Stay Away!" :-) So, to me it was a good first impression! After all why would a perfectly good apple be positioned there like that?

Technical (Comp, lighting, color, focus):
I like the composition. With the apple being in the center you are drawn into the frame of the picture. Love the lighting and would be curious to know how you managed to get light in the perfect place on the apple there in the middle of all that brush.
The color choice is perfect. I think a red apple would have been too dark, but the green there just pops!
And the slightly oof foreground just places you POW right where you want the eye to fall.

Challenge:
Your photo has just a hint of evil and for me meets the challenge perfectly.

Artistic/Emotion:
I think this is a very good artistic piece. Seems to me to be thought through well. You put the colors together very well.
Emotionally it get an A+ from me. (refer to "First Impressions")

Summary:
My opinion? I like the shot! I like it alot :-) I like the effort and thought you put into the shot. I like the composition of the colors. My only suggestion to make this better would have been a crop at the bottom to get rid of the sideways c shaped branch there at the bottom as it is slightly distracting.

Comment by giantmike:
I think the best goal for this challenge it is find a subject that is enhanced by the negative color technique. Unfortunately, I don't think this one works well there, as nothing looks negative or enhanced.
