Comment by tomzinho:
flash shots are tough. detail and focus is fine, but the flash makes it look too snapshot-like. i might have cropped in closer to see if i could avoid that look.

I love the way you have caught the light in the bird's eye, the red is lovely too. the line behind the bird is a slight distraction as is the spot of light far right.

Composition - The background is too busy for this pic. Whatever the cat is sitting on is not terrible, but a little busy too with all the little shiny spots. The cat looks pretty upset if I do say so. You cut him off a bit on the right side. Cats are pretty good subjects for photos generally, but this one looks like you're shooting him with water and not a camera.

Technical - The focus is way off. It almost looks like some kind of effect was added to this image to make it that way. From what I can gather here, it looks like the pic was pretty blurry and you tried to sharpen it too many times or tried to make a very small picture pretty big. Its lost a substantial amount of resolution for any number of reasons or combinations of reasons. Not a very well taken photo and I know that camera will take good pics, I have one sitting right behind me.

Overall - I'm not surprised by the score at all here. Unfortunately there are just too many things messed up (or maybe distorted on purpose) to allow this to score very high. Hopefully the next picture will do you better. Good luck in future challenges - Inspzil

Cute cat but it looks like you lost too much detail during compression.

Cat looks too enhanced or not enhanced enough, the rug's synthetic, the wood panelling is imitation, my senses are battered.

Greetings from the Critique Club!

First, I concur with all of the compliments below! In looking at your other photos, it seems that you have a talent for using lines effectively in your photography, and this is no exception. The short lines on the outside walls all point inward, directing our attention to your main subject: the doors. This image also very nicely complies with the challenge of Symmetry. I enjoy the muted tones of the photo, too. I get a peaceful feeling from the shot, almost as if you are saying that City Hall is a peaceful, orderly place. But then there are the strange shapes behind the gothic grating and the door itself: weird trapezoids that add an interesting flare to your image.

If this is just an architectural study, I think you've done well. If you wanted to go further, I would somehow pull more focus to those elements that are most important for your communication. Either way, you may want to think about trying to capture more interesting light for this photo. Perhaps just coming at night or at sunset would give this some lighting punch that would make us want to stop and stare and perhaps even think.

Other technical matters: again, great cropping and point of view, though you may want to think about evening things up a bit and centering the doorway, and it seems your focus could be just a tad off.

In sum, I like this image. It makes me think and I just enjoy looking at it, mostly because of your exceptional use of line. Best of luck in the future!

Cute kitty! It seems either over-exposed or over sharpened (I can't seem to ever tell the difference). Cropping off the hind end seems a tad mean. The blanket background sort of works, but the wood siding doesn't offer much contrast.
