 Not totally sure if this is in the spirit of the topic or not, but it was the thought I had and replacing his beard with branches was a good learning experience. It actually came out better than I expected.

As seems usual for these sort of composites, the final tweaking around the edges of the merge took a lot of tedious work to get it looking right. I hope the details of the roots extending into his face and his nostrils is appreciated.... Nahhhh.
