This has to be a provocation!
I can understand how you want to show your dismay with the 90° turn...but I personally think this is a slight on the viewer.
You might as well get the same "desolation" atmosphere if you turned it into a B&W image or choose a little underexposure or added a dark vignette. |

you have given me a crick in my neck ..
its a shame you have uploaded this in the wrong orientation .. i'm assuming it was unintentional .??. altho i have been told not to assume .. !! .. ;)
but it is a desolate scene . the empty bench and the trees having lost their leaves .. a sign of the times right now .. :) |

| I don't know if the orientation was planned, but its not working here. Even if it were oriented correctly, it would still be a boring image. I will not tweak my neck in an attempt to analyze this image properly. |

| I am sure that everyone has commented on it being sideways, so I am gonna crane my neck and look at it portrait. I personally think, if you had done this is black and white and played around with the contrasts and structure of it, this would have been very good. Completely getting your point across of Desolate times. I would have also cropped it to the grass line. Yes, definitely screaming out to be a black and white. IF this was a Free Study, obviously my score would be a 1/2. As of right now a 3 |

| Sure it's a vertical picture rotated into landscape orientation. So therefore it takes up a larger space on the page than it would were it "correctly" oriented. On the off chance that it's intentional, extra credit for devious creativity. Re-orienting my head, it's a rather pedestrian scene, not that interesting. Yet, I do see something that is very interesting. The darker trees to the left, the birch to the lower right and the slightly angled horizontal bench alongside the birch make a strong over-riding composition, which brings balance and peacefulness to the image. It's enough to elevate the afore-mentioned pedestrian-ness. To me that suggests a fine eye in search of a "worthy" (more interesting) subject. This marriage of eye and subject will give birth to some excellent photographs. |

First question is "Why turn it sideways?"
Because the world is sideways? If so, show me something that's impacted by the shift in gravity. Give me a visual clue that something is 'wrong' or otherwise impacted by the sideways world.
The image is stark and otherwise empty, but if you're going to show me 'desolate' then I want an image that shows me a wide expanse of nothingness and not a narrow view turned sideways. Also I find the cutting off of the shadow of the bench in particular makes it appear as if there's something less desolate there than you're showing me so you had to crop in.
It's not a bad idea but it needs a compositional anchor that seals the deal and lets me know that it's not a title that anchors a snapshot but a photograph with purpose. 5 for me. |

| I know you've heard it before, sideways blah blah… I think this might have done quite well if you had gone one step further and put it upside down, and giving it a clever title, like "the whole world seems upside down right now" |

Why the sideways presentation?
Sorry, from what I just read in the forums that can happen inadvertently, so I'll just enjoy it with my head kinked sideways. It looks like it would be a pleasant place to sit in normal times. As it is you have captured the desolation/desertion well. |

An empty bench, a familiar sight these days of social distancing. I like the light of a sunny early-spring day, fresh and cold.
The photo appears rotated, this seems to happen sometimes when an upright taken shot is entered from a phone. |

| I don't think that rotating and image is a hard thing to do. Double check after entering. This will cost you many precious points. Another thing is that landscapes look better as panorama views.You have a beautiful sunlight and nice shadows, why not move around and try to add this touch into your composition. It looks uninteresting as a whole. 2 extra points for the purpose of the challenge (5+2) |

This is sideways. Did you enter it straight from your cellphone. It's happened to me a couple of times. Only vertical images, though. Looked correct on my cellphone the whole time; only saw it was sideways when I went to a "real computer". Darnsies.
I suspect you'll get at least a TT anyway! :D |

I’m not sure why you didn’t shoot this in landscape mode or even rotate it maybe the site cancel can rotate it for you.
Anyway to be brutally honest there doesn’t really seem to be a focal point. The chair in the foreground doesn’t really add to the image, and the homes in the background lack appeal. I realise maybe you are in lockdown, but I’m pretty sure you could’ve come up with something better :-) |

Unfortunate that the image wasn't rotated before submission. The lighting on the trees and branches is very nice.
