I didn't really get into photography until October 2006. I bought an old Nikon EM SLR 35mm film camera off of ebay for $63. From there i began trying different things... I got some different lenses, different filters, different lighting... just to get used to the camera. I went through several rolls a week and got better with every shot. I was going to start with a Nikon DSLR but i figured that if i started with digital, i would never lean how to properly shoot in manual and never bother to learn the technical aspects of photography. For about a year a continued to upgrade my equipment by buying and selling used equipment on ebay. I actually made quite a bit of money by buying and selling camera equipnet. I made several thousand dollars just by buying an old film camera/lens kit, playing with it to learn about it, then selling the camera and lenses in separate auctions with proper pictures and descriptions.
Eventually I worked my way up to an auto focus Nikon F60. I loved the ability to autofocus, although I missed the split screen for the times when I wanted to manual focus. The problem with having auto focus for me was that I got lazy... I started even shooting in green camera mode... booo!!! i no longer used manual mode... that's a tough habbit to break...
Eventually in December 2007 I broke down and bought a used Nikon D50 for $330 off ebay. I was BLOWN away simply by the ability to change the white balance with a single button!!! No more changing to tungsten film or putting a correction filter on for me!!! From there I began to take pictures of everything I saw because I no longer was restricted to 24 shots per film that cost me money for every shot... it's very hard to learn on film because you don't get to see your pic results right away...
At this time I was still shooting in green camera (program) mode... Most of the time i was happy with my pics, but they never turned out exactly the way I invisioned them. I didn't have photoshop at the time, all I had was a cheezy editing program that comes with Mac computers called colour sync... you get like five sliders for exposure/sharp/sat/... ect... terrible... but at the time I loved it... hahaha stupid me...
Eventually I broke my habit and started using my light meter and shot in manual mode... I have never used program mode since... it's manual mode or nothing =)
But, I still didn't have photoshop... FINALY in september 2008 i bought photoshop CS3 Extended... yea, i'm one of those suckers who buys all my software... after learning all the different features of photoshop, i realized the beneft of shooting my pics in RAW format.
I joined DPC on july 20th 2008 and have been addicted ever since! I entered the Hot challenge the first week that I signed up and placed 149 / 164... i was actually happy with this score because i thought that I would be dead last!!! from that point on I began working harder and harder on the challenges. I got lots of help from other members in the forms and got lots of ideas from browsing all the other users pictures. I have been slowly getting better and better and I jsut got my first ribbon for the Immovable challenge on September 17, 2008. It took me 15 challenges and just under two months but I finally did it =)
Aside from photography... I am a High School Physics and Math teacher. I graduated from teachers college in July 2008, taught grade 9/10 math in summer school for the month of August, and now I am applying for a teaching job at all local school boards. No luck yet... but soon I will get a job =)
Currently I work for my dad's house renovation / construction company. I like this type of job because when I get home, work is finished! When I was teaching I always had lessons to prepare and marking to do on weekends and evenings... working construction all of my evenings and weekends are free for... well... you know... photography!!!
Most of my pictures wouldn't be possible without the patient help of my Fiance. She is VERY patient and really appreciates my work!! THANK YOU SOOOO MUCH!!!!!
