Love this shot. I wasn't aware of this locations name before but this place is also used for the nik snapseed example shot - I had to get my phone to check it wasn't the same image... your capture is much better though =). The clouds forming around this tree almost as though they were its leaves is fantastic.

Love the stark tonal contrast. Are these burned trees? Fascinating how the roots stick up from the ground like that.
02/23/2012 04:40:11 PM
This is a beautifully rendered image - brave to offer up a monochrome despite the rig colours available to you. It works very well though.

Great stuff.
02/22/2012 01:14:06 AM
Lively tones and textures.
02/20/2012 09:24:52 PM
Stark, great tones.
02/20/2012 01:36:35 PM
LOVE this...feels stark, cold, dead. Great image with a terrific 'feel'.

oooh! I really want to go there! What an incredible spot! Well captured! (voted earlier -9-)

Superb. Massive 10
02/19/2012 12:10:34 PM
I like the curving line of the trees in the composition. Nicely toned, too.
02/18/2012 06:40:50 PM
Amazing how the clouds seem to jut out like extensions of the branches. Lovely starkness and tones. Well done.
02/18/2012 02:08:25 PM
The parched ground the the dead looking trees really make your title ring true. Your composition is right on with the curve of the trees leading the eye - very well done 7
02/18/2012 10:04:52 AM
Seldom seen in B&W, but perhaps more powerful so. Very good.
02/18/2012 08:10:12 AM
Stark beauty.
02/17/2012 05:53:17 PM
This is nice. The processing matches the landscape - stark, bold. Great job.
02/16/2012 06:14:48 PM
[edit] Perfect. What a great photo. Looks like a few of you visited this location. After voting everyone in this challenge, top ten. Good luck!
02/16/2012 03:39:30 PM
Very nice job highlighting the bleakness.
02/16/2012 06:11:47 AM
Lovely comp and I think the exposure was well handled - just enough detail in the bark of the tree. Was this Doodvlei or Sossusvlei? Hope you enjoyed the trip there - on my bucket list of things to do!
02/14/2012 06:17:25 PM
Great find and nice composition.
02/14/2012 04:17:51 PM
Love the use of negative space to emphasize the tree.
02/14/2012 10:54:40 AM
Interesting black and white version of the Death Valley, Namibia and the second in this challenge. Those clouds make this a unique shot of a much photographed subject.
02/13/2012 09:43:08 PM
I really like how the clouds almost seem to fill out as "leaves" for the foreground tree.
02/13/2012 09:17:59 PM
I like this high key landscape.
02/13/2012 05:47:02 PM
yep that'll do good old desert landscape with dead trees and nice sky, 8
02/13/2012 03:50:31 PM
great range, perfect tones, perfect composition. love this.
02/13/2012 06:28:58 AM
Great image! You have done an excellent job with the B&W conversion.
02/12/2012 06:02:51 PM
crazy dramatic - a best of top finisher
02/12/2012 05:40:11 PM
Wonderful composition, tones, and texture. Wish I'd taken it. 10.
02/12/2012 12:41:07 PM
Very atmospheric, almost like a still from a sci-fi movie. Nicely focused. Good job.
02/12/2012 12:17:54 PM
Gorgeous image. (8) Wonder if it could even stand a little bit more contrast? Although, that's just a personal taste thing I suppose, there's absolutely nothing wrong with it as it is.
02/12/2012 09:44:27 AM
A single tree would probably be more powerful composition
02/11/2012 06:40:08 PM
Great B/W, maybe a bit too dark the upper part of sky compared to the rest of the image. A really good work!
02/11/2012 12:45:14 PM
Like a crack in the very fabric of the photograph. Wonderful.
02/11/2012 11:26:37 AM
Branches stretch to the sky.
Roots radiate out across earth.
I thirst for touch
of my fellow kind.
In sight, but far from reach.

What struck me as interesting in this shot is that the tree in the foreground seems to be reaching out in branch, root, and even the shadow to it tree brethren scattered far apart in the landscape. It makes the scene even more parch and desolate.
02/11/2012 08:44:08 AM
Now this is my kind of shot. Love it. Top 10, or 20.
02/10/2012 08:08:31 PM
seems like such a wonderful place to visit and photograph
02/10/2012 09:03:38 AM
Great processing of stunning Namibian scene. Lucky cloud that day! Well done. Konrad or Philip?
02/10/2012 06:59:11 AM
Very nice, this shot is awesome, would also make a perfect surrounding for a fashion shoot, where is this?
