Challenge: Best of 2011 (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Portfolio
Lens: Tamron SP AF 14mm f/2.8 Aspherical IF for Canon
Location: Thousand Island Lake, CA
Date: Aug 25, 2011
Aperture: 3.2
ISO: 1600
Shutter: 30sec
Date Uploaded: Feb 4, 2012

[Feb. 23rd, 2012 11:26:31 PM]

Shot this summer at Thousand Island Lake with Banner Peak in the background. This is a better image than the one I used for the "Long Exposure VI" challenge (IMHO), since it includes more of the Milky Way in it and compositionally I think it works better.

This is from a single shot at 30Sec. I did a little noise reduction and selective levels and sharpening adjustments. I wish I had cropped a little of the bottom.

Thanks you all for your votes and nice comments.

Wow! Great sky capture! I firmly believe that where there is nothing to lift one's gaze above the horizon, people get a bit careless in being realistic about their importance in the overall scheme of things. It is views like this that remind you of just how much is out there - beyond your understanding and experience! Very nice capture.

(Participant so not voting.)

There are a few things as impressive as the heavens above at night. You captured something very special here. For me the white snow is more a distraction than it should be. My eye keeps coming back to it.

Mount Banner -- AHHHH, fantastic! I spent 5 nights in and around the Minarets/Banner/Lyell range this summer. One of our campsites was at the west end of 1000 Island Lake, at the feet of Banner. I had a similar shot as yours that i considered entering but yours is 10x better than mine so I'm glad I held back. :) Good luck and I'd like to get some details from you regarding the technicals of your shot. Stacked images?

Bumping to a 9. even though I have seen the Milkyway a few times, this is one of the best.

Beautiful job of processing this; love the detail in the milky way. Just enough sharpness, starts have not become too "crunchy."

the dark scenery detracts from the image and gives it an underexposed feel. maybe if it was pure silhouette and i couldn't see the snow.

The celestial river begins to flow at eventide
stars shimmer on the ebony surface
I look up at the skies vast expanse,
and submerge myself in its infinite wonder.

With all the light pollution in and around cities we truly forget just how astonishing and how humbling it is too look up at the night sky. It is only when we escape the hustle and bustle to the remote wilderness areas that we can marvel how vast and majestic the universe is and how we are but a small part of it. To those who have had this experience, it is something you never forget.
