 In simple terms:
A ferrofluid is a liquid which becomes strongly magnetized in the presence of a magnetic field. What you see above is that reaction.

Purchased a small container of ferrofluid not too long ago and very happy the science challenge came around before I ran out. Luckily I had some seriously strong magnets lying around (Don't ask my why) and so this is what you get.

Not sure how the voting will go as I think many people won't know what it is they are looking at and will think "ok, a macro shot".

150+ outtakes, 2 hours shooting, 30 min scrubbing it off my hands and this is the one I love.
