Female Broadtailed HB feeds 10 day old chicks. Nest of aspen bark, lichen and spider webs. The nest is the size of a walnut shell.
I'm proud of this image capture. It represents a rare capture to me. This was shot in the wilderness. No special lighting tricks. Only natural lighting. HB nests are normally too high in the tree to afford a good shot angle. This nest was placed well for photography. Because of the low light situation, the image capture had to coincide with relative stopped motion in the birds. They move a lot and I was lucky. The nest is about the size of a walnut shell. On day 14 after hatch, these HB chicks fledged. My distance from camera to subject was 15'.

What is the secret to getting good focus at 1/100 with a 400mm?

Wow - at only 10 days old, they must grow amazingly fast! They already look to be mom's size!

Colors are great, but I'm not sure about the angle of this photograph. It almost looks like the mom's head is part of whatever is at the top part of the image.

Lovely natural yet seldom seen bird image. I hope you do well with this fabulous educational image. Crisp and well composed and timed, patience is rewarded! Super to be able to see them like this and not just when attracted to some plastic feeder with sugar water in it.
