Challenge: In The Style Of: bspurgeon (Advanced Editing VII)
Collection: Challenges 2011
Camera: Canon EOS-7D
Lens: Canon EF 100mm f/2.8 USM Macro
Location: Balboa Pier
Date: Jul 9, 2011
Aperture: f/4
ISO: 250
Shutter: 1/60
Date Uploaded: Jul 12, 2011

So I borrowed Ben's kids. It was my only hope. :-)

Actually, he mentioned the girls wanted to get up and see the sun rise on a Saturday morning and I thought that would be a fine idea, so I drove down and joined them. It was a lovely morning and we had a wonderful time! His girls are so enjoyable to be around - truly delightful. He's a pretty nice guy, too.

This is Ben's middle girl, and his leg in the background. Processing is Nik Silver Efex with a generous dose of grain (can't remember the film type I chose, but one of 'em in the 400 ISO range, I think.) I have a smoother version, but I kinda like the crunchiness of this one.

Not too concerned over score here. Really just enjoyed the experience. And that, to me, is very much in the style of Ben Spurgeon. I'll post other shots - some of the man himself! - after the challenge.

I didn't get to commenting on as many shots as I would have liked to - I gave this a 7 - what a wonderful bunch of other shots too, esp the little girl with the camera, you caught her expression just perfectly as any of us who have had children can attest to with the slightly puzzled look filled with determination. What a day that must have been. Thanks so much for the gallery of the man who is Ben.

Loved this! I gave it an 8. I did wonder if maybe it was Ben's, as the little girl looked familiar. LOL!

darn, I did not finish voting for the lack of time, and I did not get to this image - so no comment and no score... it's a wonderful image, and I would probably recognize Abby (or is this Bella?). Perfect crop to add the element of mystery to this

Deb, I don't know how I missed this one!!!!! I thought I saw ALL the images. How splendid and sweet. With a piece of Ben himself, to boot. See? BETTER than me :-)

haha - I almost wrote down "so who rented Ben's kids?" I loved the motion of her about to leave the frame. Really nice interpretation.

Nice finish Deb, considering you were languishing in the mid 5s for a while there! I love this and am glad it did quite well.

for me the framing elevates this considerably. it starts a story without ending it, and it makes the image so much more dynamic. processing certainly has bspurgeon's qualities.

Fantastic enegetic candid; great tones tones and filmish look.

Thank you for a wonderful morning Deb. Our daughters seemingly adore you, and the images were fantastic as always. Can't let this go by without a honorary Sterling Sturgeon for all of the above and: "remember the nice lady with the camera who ate at Ruby's on the pier...went to Tunnel Beach with us...last summer...with the man named Lev from San Diego...remember her? When do we see her again?".

The arm is great, as is the turned head. I'm bumping this on 3rd viewing (from 7-9)

Good job. I would have not dared to participate with a picture of a child but this one has some power beyond the ubiquitous sweetness.

Emotionally charged perfect moment captured. If not Ben someone who understands.

This could be the real thing! Very convincing in any case. I love the magic of this fleeting moment that you've captured.

This is one of the few that REALLY look like his work. Most people are just going for blur for blur's sake and this has the movement that his often does. Love the unexpected crop. This is a keeper.
