Taking a chance that some might recognize this from Flickr. But I just love this image, so oh well... My finished image has the doorknob cloned out because it was way too distracting and prominently placed. But cloning and I don't seem to go very well together where DPC is concerned, so I just minimized the knob as much as I reasonably could, without totally erasing it.

The model is the unbelievably talented (and super nice) Carly Lyn, who does, in fact, own the two chickens, plus two goats, a horse, and three dogs. She is the coolest lady. The pooch in the shot is Uma, who would not be denied a spot in the limelight. Here is a solo moment.

An excellent comment regarding lighting, which is from below as observed: when working with animals, we often don't have but a couple of seconds before all hell breaks loose. This location was on the spur of the moment as it was not planned (I'd gone there to shoot her goats and saw the chickens). I shot a couple of images without any lighting at all for insurance, then added the reflector - and it was instant chaos. I only managed 2 more shots from the burst before the hens made a run for it.

This is a tremendous shot - so many vignettes within it and such great colours !!

I love this on so many levels.

Only tiny nit pick is that her feet look about a metre long . . I guess she might be part Kangaroo - but failing that my second guess is that it's perspective :- )

excellent work Johanna. I like the flatness of this, apparent absence of perspective and shadows. looks very painterly.

Amen to excellence! I missed a whole page of pics during voting and this one came to surprise and delight me. Would make a marvelous book cover for a book of images you are yet to take on the same subject. Bravo!

and the kind of lighting in similar period paintings. Charming and raised a notch or so by that either stupendously silly or faintly threatening canine.

I love this!!!!! The only problem I have with it is her right foot needs to be back against the upper step. It appears to be several inches longer than the other. Still a wonderful composition. Love the expression of the dog.

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: Wonderful subjects, composition, light and colour. This is just tremendous Johannah - I loved it when I saw it in your Flickr portfolio and I love it here. Makes me want to take a deep breath. Her dress against the green door and the French Bulldog pocking through the hatch is just marvellous. And chickens too!

Critical stuff: Perhaps the right foot distorted by the lens and its proximity looks a bit odd for some audiences (but personally I think it adds to the quirkiness of the image).

Overall: Just spectacularly accomplished. I hope this ribbons.

Very Americo-French, maybe Tanguera, very delightful and fun anyway. love how you got that moment when they all paused.

There is something about this I absolutely love, it's just simply wonderful and as with all my favorite photos I can't say why, even without the dog it would still be as good.

I absolutely love the pose, the details, and the colors, but you could have done so much more with the lighting. It looks like she is being lit by sun reflecting off the sidewalk in front of her, meaning the light is coming from below, which is not generally considered a flattering angle of light. Adding a reflector to bounce some light on her from above would have added some really pretty light.

hi impact stuff from where I sit. I think it the the combination of the colors, the expressions on the faces of all living things, and the lady's long contours working so well with the pitchfork. I even don't miss the Gothic window.

My favorite of the challenge. I wish the frame was squared up and the pitchfork was all in the frame, but the critters, the colors, the expression of the model, the lighting, is all spot on.
