Really, they can. But they're seriously funky-looking caterpillars! I think this little guy is just awesome :-) But then I tend to be in Bug Photography Mode in the summertime. There are just so many!!

Had my 36mm + 20mm extension tubes on and used diffused fill flash.

PP - cropped, levels, white balance, dodged/burnt on caterpillar a little, reduced noise, resized, sharpened, added border.

Great shot. I shot one a few years back and battled to identify it. That means that you have at least spent some time trying to identify your subject, a good NG trait. The title has helped the viewer identify the insect and get an education about it! I think you used a ring flash or off camera flash at least and this is not unheard of in NG but it has washed out the image a little. Still a good, thoughtful effort with decent focus on the head and everything is visible and well composed. Publishable? Sure.
