Looking back at this I can see how the lens distorted her face. I didn't notice when I took the shot. Funny how experience changes everything.

Thanks Gordon for the critique.

This is a charming picture. The lighting is excellent - very even and soft and the 'pose' seems quite natural. The smile looks genuine and you've gotten good catchlights in the eyes which bring the shot to life.

The only problem I have with this shot is that I think you need to use a longer lens/ get further away as it just feels like her features are a bit distorted by the focal length on the camera.

Not sure if you can do that with your current equipment though, but it has made her head seem ever so slightly 'off' and makes me uneasy looking at the shot. Everything else is extremely well done.

I do feel like this is some of my best work yet. I am very pleased with the results.

This was taken with the lighting from my livingroom window. The original seemed to bright. The effect I was looking for was a painted effect. I toned the colors down with some sepia color.

I didn't tell her to pose in any way. She was playing with the flowers and I was just taking pictures. This is naturally her style. Grrr.... She is also going through a stage where she refuses to let me put her hair up except when she goes to dance.

Thanks everyone for the comments.

Cute kid shot. The composition is great but I wish the shot overall was a little brighter and maybe some more contrast.

Cute smile. The coloring seems a bit dull to me. Maybe that was the intention.

What lovely, delicate lighting you chose! This child has that unique look of both youthfulness and wisdom. Somehow her touseled hairstyle and this pose seem to diminish her innocence, though.

Nice portrait. Cute kid. Lighting on her face looks too harsh judgin by skin color on her arms compared to her face. Otherwise, a fine job here. This is one of my next areas of study.

What a doll. She looks so natural like that, this does not look posed at all! And I love the coloring on this, it makes it seem nostalgic or something. Was it adjusted at all?

Wonderful shot and composition. I feel that is is just a tad light in the facial area. Great model.

Technically a great achievement. The colours are lovely, heading towards a kind of sepia toned theme but set off by the flowers. The lighing is lovely and soft, and I really like the way you made her hair kind of unruly, and captured a smile that looks mostly real, not faked for the camera. It's not really my type of photo, but it looks good enough to be in a calendar :).

The colorized look is very interesting. Can't wait to hear how you did it. Neat pose, too!

Very nice portrait. Color seems a little low and the background is way to close in color to her skin. Nice flowers. 7 Swash

This is a beautiful portrait... I love the soft colors here and the look on her face... nice job with the catch lighting in her eyes as well :) Something looks a bit odd here and i can't really put my finger on it... her head looks to be slightly out of perspective... too large for the rest of her body maybe? None-the-less, a great shot :) - setzler

You should be very proud of this one. I love it. Should be in top three if ppl don't count off because it is a child photo. NICE Work

This is a very charming portrait, obviously not camera shy! The lighting and background are perfect. My only niggle, she seems to be holding onto the flowers for dear life, maybe just loosen up the hands a little.

Very nice framing. Good details on the features on the girl and on the flowers. The only thing bothering me is that the tone of her skin seems a bit off - particularly on her hand. It almost looks as thought that part was painted rather than a photo. Overall very nice = 7

What a beautiful portrait. Framing and composition are great - she's really got a death grip on those flowers though. The lighting is very nice as well. 8

Very cool choice to use a square framing on this shot -- I think it really balances the composition well. The background is a little close to the skintone of the girl for me, but still an overall great shot.

A good portrait shot, and the lighting is nicely even. I personally would have cropped the righthand side of this shot more, so that the child's head isn't as central, and perhaps brightened the shot a little more, but doing so without losing the textures would be tricky.

A nice soft shot. I feel that her skin color too closely matches the background though. Perhaps a bit more saturation would help. DPz

Amazing color! At first I thought it was colorized but this beautiful child is just blessed with these amazing green eyes. You get a 10 from me - joanns

This is a marvelous portrait. I love the fact that she is entering the photograph from the side, instead of the standard "head-on" shot. Your model is adorable to boot :-)

It's not a comment on your skills as a photographer, this is a well taken photo. Tto me the pose is highly inappropriate for a child. This is very clearly imitative of adult fashion, even soft porn, shoots. A 20 year old posed in the same way, wearing suspenders with no shirt, with the same expression, would be considered a sexy shot. The expression is just not natural for a child, the effect is quite disconcerting.
12/09/2002 10:50:38 PM
Nice use of color. Though it looks unnatural overall. I'm not exactly sure what it is about this picture, but something feels unnatural to me.

Excellent shot! I like the way the color of the flowers stands out against all that brown. Good focus.

such a beautiful photo. This would look excelent as one of those black and white photos with hand color added to it. Obviously, not allowed by DPC, but something to think about outside of the challenge. I love the angle and framing/cropping. your focus and clarity are great as well. The lighting is also very nice. good soft lighting. a very pretty girl. You can tell her that she (and you) got a high score from me this week. great shot. Good luck in the challenge.
