Never had a 7 stick around this long. I'm having palpitations. But I did get to hang out again with this to gorgeous gals last night!

[post challenge]
Just returned from a fabulous shoot out in the boonies, and came home to this!!!

OMG, miracles do happen. My first ribbon. And in a Free Study. Thank you so much everyone, for the fabulous comments and your amazing votes. It finally stayed over 7.

THANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOUTHANKYOU

[post DQ]
Oh MAN!!!!! Totally did NOT see that coming. Thanks for the sympathy. In truth, I did not even recall doing any cloning when I submitted it. I THINK the DQ was over the hem of the coat at bottom left, which was ragged and horrid. I filled it in with a bit of the fur from the cuff. Perhaps I did such a great job editing that I actually thought it was that way!

Thank you all for your amazing outpouring of support. Every black cloud has a silver lining, including this one. Great Dames became my first ever published image at 1x - the same week it was DQd. That version has both fur AND toes :-)

What a shame! If this is dq then the rules ain't right. To many restrictions in Advanced editing. Still my favorite!

Oh come on - I just saw this travesty. Seriously, Johanna - this is just not right that you got DQ'd. So freaking random what is allowed and what is not. Aragh!!

Oh, boo hoo, I'm really crying! That lower left section of the photo is so insignificant to the overall image. It's the light, pose, contrast, and composition that make this such an outstanding piece of art. Sorry, sorry, sorry.

What a gorgeous double portrait, Johanna! And huge congrats on your first ribbon!!! WOOT! :-)

ETA: seconding the previous comment by CNovack on the film noir aspect of this shot. Very emotive of that period, very Mickey Spillane-ish. Excellent work.

I step away and come back to see you have ribboned. Congrats Johanna! You are no longer the bridesmaid;-P

Absolutely love the photo and fabulous title! Lighting is wonderful. The set-up, costumes, and pose of the models makes me think of film noir. There is an air of mystery but also an element of danger. Mel has a nervous and a frightened look. She makes me think of the dame in danger in the old detective novels/movies who cling to the hero/protecter while looking over their shoulder. Here it is the trusty and faithful dog, Isabella, who will protect her from those nasty thugs:-) Fantastic work and congrats again on the ribbon.

A few days ago, my wife and I were browsing through your Flickr account and latest challenge entries, and we were very impressed with your progression, especially regarding lighting and model direction: you have a great talent there!
This photo summarizes it very well: the lighting is top notch, the expressions are powerful, and the B&W conversion is just splendid. Congratulations!

I'm going through the entries, stopping at those images I feel have had the benefit of an unconventional eye and dwelling a little longer to try to see and appreciate what you saw. This is one of those images.

Positives: Lovely portrait - I love the balance between the subjects and your lighting is to die for. The clarity of the Great Dane is just amazing and I really like the edge of your model's hat - it fills a little space top left in the frame adds a great deal of balance. Her expression and direction of gaze gives a great juxtaposition with the stare of the dog.

Critical stuff: I hope the clipping of the paws doesn't hurt you too much.

Overall: Lovely, lovely shot.

The dog is better lit than the woman, which is too bad. I would have liked to see more light on her face. Nevertheless a really great and really interesting portrait. I am giving this an 8

Beautiful mono, wonderful lighting, maybe a tad too much on the dog's hind and right side of face. The human model lighting I like, makes for the mood. Well done.8

Oh, I love this one; playfullness in the woman and seriousness in the dog, lol. The expressions, lighting and processing are great. The leg in the bottom left is a little distracting and her hand is a little dark, but overall a great image.

Nice dog, and love the tones on this perfect.
  Photographer found comment helpful.
05/04/2011 01:13:41 AM
An arresting image. Maybe a bit too much of a tight crop but I do like where the faces are. Also, probably should have darkened that lower left corner since her leg serves no purpose in this shot except as a possible distraction.

Great idea. I wish the paws weren't chopped off at the bottom. I think her face deserves the same light as the dog. Heck, I'd love a portrait of just the canine. LOL Fun stuff.

Great lighting and processing... looks amazing in B&W... one minor nitpick is the crop right on the dog's toes... my two cents...
