In the morning, the pelicans head "up the coast" so the speak; in the evening they head back down. I can watch these guys fly all day - they're remarkably graceful.

I was going to title this Homeward and Outbound, but figured I'd wait and see how many find the freighter (and can see it as such - it's hard unless you know what it is) without the verbal clue. That's Catalina Island in the lower left corner.

And yes, I know, this definitely won't score based on the thumbnail. :-)

Thought this may do better. Still an acceptable score though. Reading the comments makes me smile. It's about a 50-50 split about whether the foreground adds or detracts from the image. Highlights the fact you can't please all of the people all of the time :)

I like the simplicity of this shot, but would be better if you cropped out the bottom hill and building.

Ok. Since I can't vote on this challenge -- I'm giving out bluebirds to my top ten favorites. I'll post them in the posthumous thread after the challenge is over -- but I just couldn't wait and had to start now.

What a wonderful shot! I love that you included some foreground in this image. I wouldn't have thought of it, and would have been tempted to crop it up. However, it really adds to this image and makes it as wonderful as it is!

Here's a bluebird -- and good luck in the challenge!!

Ooh, I love this. The hill and ship (or whatever that is) really help this shot a lot. I love how the clouds echo the line of birds on the left. Great shot!

The alignment of the boat at the bottom to the tip of the "V" shows a wonderful compositional eye for this minimalistic approach to the bird challenge! 7

Oh. I'll have to go listen to that Simon and Garfunkel song now. :) I like the simplicity. I would have probably cropped out that dark line at the bottom. :)
