Too much reflection with flash, so I only used the light of a spotlight and a softbox.

Something different than "just the front tire of a car" nice !!!

As soon as I noticed this challenge, a voice inside me said, "OK, this is a challenge where everyone will just shoot the front tire of a sports car or something"

Black and white was a very inspired (if not ingenious) choice for this. The way the metal of the gears blends in with the background, and the dramatic lighting -- makes those cogs really cut like teeth.
