Challenge: Chocolate (Basic Editing I)
Camera: Canon PowerShot G3
Location: Dark room home
Date: Jul 18, 2004
Aperture: 8.0
ISO: 50
Shutter: 1"

Liquid chocolate on the bottom of a cup, with a drop of milk dripping to the center, forming the splash with the mixture of the elements.

Dark Room and flash activated by the sound of the leak, through "flash-tigger" coupled to the same. Illuminated side for mirrored rebatedor.

In the PS I just made small crop to get right alignment, redimensionamento, auto-levels and unsharp mask.

I have tried it on 2nd August with different consistencies of liquid chocolate, but couldn't achieve the desired effect. Please put some more light on the technique!

Well done on the Blue Ribbon. Will look forward to seeing more of your work in the challenges to come. This particular photo is fascinating, particularly by the way those splashes out from the centre almost appear like eyelashes.

Hello to all,

Before everything he/she would like to ask excuses for not answering individually. It is that I don't speak English, my language homeland is the Portuguese. What reads and I write here is with an electronic translator's help.

I am very happy, honest and grateful to all that had contributed so that it won the 1st place of this challenge.

As I already explained above, this picture was made with the aid of a "flash trigger" that I learned to do through the internet. For who doesn't know, it is a circuit with microphone, linked to the flash and that it captures the sound of the drop when falling. Of course besides, I made an elaboration with the elements and illumination, in a careful way, with hope of obtaining a good voting, but it didn't imagine to be the first. Thank you very much to all, I will keep that moment for the rest of my life.

Caramba! This photo is picture perfect...is it realy a splash? In pool I'd call it a scratch. It looks like blown glass.

Wonderful catch! Is a decent composition, but seeing this a little closer to make out the little webby looking spray would be a lot more dramatic for me.

Creative idea, I would have tried another composition though, its a bit centered and static like this :) (9)

This is an effective one, I like it a much. The splash into the chocolate is amazing!!! :-) I would have applied a different crop, this way the plate's edges are too close to the frame. I would use a tighter crop around the splash, I think it's worth to get rid of the plate, it doesn't add too much. Centered compositions work better with tighter crops, I think so. :-) (7 - because I still love the splas and it must have been difficult to take the shot)

Stunning. My pick for the blue ribbon. I wish the background were darker (black) and there are a few nits on the lighting on the edges of the glass, but wow...this is a great photo and fantastic capture. I'm envious of your skills! <10>

Its not much of a chocolate shot but it is enough of a drop shot to warrant an 8. Only 3 out of 5 for chocotlatyness but full marks for the shot iteslf, I hope you gave details on how you got this great shot.

Nicely captured but still the image doesn't work for me. Feels slightly tilted, feels much too tight within the frame - would be better cropped much MORE tightly to lose some of the glass edge than as now with the glass touching the edge of the frame.

These drop shots will always get top marks from me, knowing how difficult they are to produce. This is very well done. Congrats 10

Very nice picture, How do you do that to take in the exact moment?
In my opinion is the best picture. Congratulations

07/21/2004 01:11:23 AM
This must have taken quite a few shots to get right. I like how it fills the frame, the lighting isnt bad, I especially like the rim lighting on the sides of the glass stem. The crown of the splash is wonderfully symmetrical and the white center offsets the brown nicely. I'm sure people will be very impressed with this one.
