Here's the unedited straight-off-the-camera version

For those who care, here's a look at the image at 100% size to see the noise:

[Dec. 1st, 2010 03:53:44 PM]

I've been doing this for a few years now and I don't think I've ever written here while a photo was in voting. Anyway, I was excited to "find" this location - actually a place I walk through every morning on my way into work.

It's funny how the world is filled with interesting things if we stop to look around. My first shot of this was without people - and I was just looking around using the camera. When I saw how the shot turned out without people … I knew I had to add one or two.

It turned out that 2 of my friends at work were happy to volunteer - and the guy walking down the stars here is actaully a bystander that just happened to be leaving at the time.

For the score, I'm feeling I might get a 3rd place ribbon if I am lucky =]

[Dec. 1st, 2010 03:58:04 PM]

I also want to add that this was done at 3200 ISO, and I think that was no problem for this type of image. I usually fear pumping up the ISO but in this case it helped since it was a hand-held shot at 1/80 sec.

If you want to encourage me to do this sort of thing,

1. can't see anybody's face
2. blown out areas as well as huge dark areas with no detail
3. different parts of the picture existing independently with no single point of focus
4. that top guy looks like he has wings

definitely my kind of image

Congratulations. Like it's been mentioned before, I also loved the clever title and of course it makes the image even better.

Nicely done. I'm surprised there isn't more grain with the camera used and the high ISO. Congrats.

Awesome job Tate. Congratulations on the finish. Not only do I not think the grain is "no problem" here, but I think it helps things. My favorite parts are the light streaming through the stairs on the left and the painted walls.

Liked reading your story about how the shot happened. It's interesting because my own entry was similar in that I knew it needed a human element. In my case I just asked a passerby for a few moments of their time. Gav this a 9, btw.

Voted much earlier coming back to comment. I keep coming back to look at the composition - it is one that speaks the most and (one of only two 10's that I gave out). I love how there are two meanings in this shot. One is the obvious of the three floors. It is the second meaning that leaves a lasting impression. Three people, three stories. One is just beginning his story by climbing to the top. One is traveling down down the stairs as he begins/ends his day. One is at the bottom and perhaps story end ready to exit the door. As I said this made a lasting impression that during the week I kept thinking back to the shot - going into my fav's.

The idea behind the Posthumous Ribbon is to encourage you to break the rules, to find new and different ways to express yourself. To free your mind to think clearly toward the solution that is certain to come, to laugh at world and at life, not doing what others are expecting you to do, but just following and listening to what's in your heart. DPC it’s a wonderful learning place where everyone should be supported on their way to be a photographer. A special attention should be aimed to those working hard with different views and approaches to photography, those not aligned with the mainstream taste and receiving no recognition. It’s our responsibility to support these photographers creating diversity and expressing different visions. Being active at the Posthumous thread it’s the best way to do it. Being active at the Posthumous thread it’s the best way to protect your and the other’s freedom of being different. Thanks for taking the time to enter this challenge. Stay wild.

I can sense four faceless people in this claustrophobic scene, as it is hard to ignore the photographer presence. (not voting)

a perfectly balanced photo with what looks like three strangers going about there lives in different directions, great composition, great theme, great photo.

Great graphical image ... beautiful lines and high contrast. The three men make this extraordinary.

Oh, I'm torn. Picture is decent. Title is very good indeed and makes me think the picture may be even better than I thought. Top ten. Thank you.

Silhouettes in a stairwell seem to always make for good photography. I like the tension in this -- has a musty indoor vibe to it.

Great light and shadows. I like that all if the faces are in the dark. Nice capture.

Nice play on words with the title. Cool scene, with three distinct stories playing out that are wide open to the imagination. Excellent capture. Very creative and interesting. Well done.

Clever play on words. I'm sure each one can tell a story. I think this embodies the spirit of a Posthumous Award.

Full of threes for certain, in fact, does not need the title. I like the high contrast and mystery of their forms.

Terrific. I enjoy taking images like this too - the intricacy of life and it's many winding roads, all of us living at the same time on different levels with different journeys, sharing space.
