We were watching a young calf simply lying on the surface of the ocean - they call this "logging" because that's exactly what it looks like. Then the calf just drifted below out of sight. Everyone was looking to see if it would reappear when all of a sudden 20 to 30 feet off the bow it just flew up out of the water. I had seconds to realize what was happening - thought "camera-picture-hurry" - lifted the camera, pressed the shutter and got this.

According to the guide scientists don't know why whales breach - my guess is they do it for fun and because "they can" - after all wouldn't you do it if you could?

Based on the challenge description as stated by SaraR this is supposed to be a challenge "filled with happiness and hope for the future". Seeing the beauty of whales and knowing the thrill this calf gave to everyone on that boat I believe this photo - although I'm positive will not get even a 5.0 (not sharp enough, cut off the top, cropped too close (wasn't cropped), would be better if there was something in the background for comparison (you try getting a whale to pose:)) - fulfills the challenge and expresses my belief that saving the creatures of this earth helps save all of us.

Lastly - may Judi get well - her talent for photography is an inspiration and just absolutely amazing.

Oh how I wish I could jump and splash in the water with the whale...to feel the freedom and beauty of such creatures would be amazing.
