I like this one a lot. It really does have the feeling that the book is floating in space and Woody is peering cautiously over the edge, looking at something very far below.

Wooohooo!! Thanks everyone, I wasn't expecting the wooden man to do this well. For those who asked, the set up is as follows:

I have a 1/2 wall in my house between the kitchen and dining room - I drapped a black cloth over it, and then another black cloth behind hanging from the ceiling. Set the book on the shelf and shoot. I used the 420ex flash and bounced it off the ceiling, but under exposed just a touch so both black cloths meshed into each other so it would look like the book was floating.

I knew that big freakin' book would come in handy some day :)

Congratulations...
I didn't vote on this challenge but you would have got 10 from me!
Would have liked to see this one with the blue ribbon...
Great idea and brilliant lighting!!! The shadow under him makes me have the feeling of dark empty space where he is looking

Well, it is certainly an interesting composition, and the words are a good match for the action figure's look-down posture. I think the lighting is right on the mark, with the only mis-step being the glare on the book face just above the top (leftmost) and right above the word Earth. The horizontal line of the book is almost centered and the left-right settings are pretty much split as well. It would be interesting to see the lower dark area increased a bit to make it more of a two thirds portion of the photo. This almost begs for another book at the lower portion for him to be looking at. Of course, that one would be titled simply, BOOK. Good shot, HTH.

Yann's a hero. I don't really like the manikin thing - it's done to death, but this is quite well conceived and executed.

Hey, this is really good! Personally, I would have liked it even more if the book and figure were in the upper left corner and in the same pose. As it is, it feels too centered. Great concept! 7

NIce Low Key Image. like the way how the image was lit and how you just have the book. it creates and illusion and makes me feel as if im really looking down from earth above. Good JOb (9)

Unusual. Unique. Put a tiny globe, barely visible , in the bottom right and you have a real wowser! As is - it's a great submission - with excellent lighting, composiition, and exposure. That means - one of the top bunch...

Ummmm, Wow. The end of the book with the crease it in of course means that this is not perfect :-). Having said that, this is probably the best photo I've seen on DPC. Great composition, great idea, well exposed, yada yada yada.. Well done.

I've got to get me one of those models...

I like it, I'm not sure why.... I think because the figure has personality.

Cute! I was wondering when I'd see another little wooden person. The only thing that I might have changed would be to have perhaps a blue light coming from below a bit... only because that would suggest that the earth is reflecting below. Still a lovely shot and an interesting, fitting entry for "Words."

Love it--I can't help but think that it MIGHT have been improved with something else in the frame--the sun at the top, or maybe the earth itself just peeking in below. Then I think more and realize that that might take away from the simplicty and starkness here--I like it as is. 9
